The idea that this song is generic or the same as everything else is laughable. Production-wise it's unique because although the Jill Scott, D'Angelo influences are obvious, the blending of the neo-soul vibe with a hard 90s hip hop beat plus the unusual instrumentation creates a very distinct sound.
Calling the writing "nothing new" is even more ridiculous considering it's painfully obvious that the lyrics (or at least most of them) are completely personal and specific to her own thoughts and current situation (i.e moving south east from Boston to LA, being stuck in a career limbo). If any other singer had written these lyrics, it would make no sense. The production is extremely colourful and she does a brilliant job of painting a vivid and detailed picture of her thoughts to compliment a track that almost feels like an art project. e.g:
Laying down on my hardwood floor again
Watching all my deepest fears just crawling on the ceiling
These colonial bricks and beams are just not enough to hold me
All I got is my hopes and dreams and this cranberry stoli

The only part of the lyrics that could possibly be described is the bit about getting high, but that's such a tiny part of the track.
As I said before, it may not be your cup of tea, but not every song has to feature huge vocals, a huge chorus and/or huge beats. This song was clearly written with the intention of being a smooth, soothing and chilled neo soul track (as neo soul tracks are). She has an incredible understanding of her range and how to use different parts of her voice in unique ways - although Brandy and Melanie are both great contraltos, they would never use their lower range in this manner.

I'm actually in A&R and the fact that you said the music industry is in shambles shows how little you know. The industry is doing just fine. Record sales are down, but other areas are up.
