It's plain to see that all that matters to Urban DJs is that she's black. The song doesn't have to have urban appeal as long as the artist does.
Nicki's problem is her releasing too many WRONG singles all at once. She'd have a crossover hit with anything as pop as Va Va Voom. Super Bass demonstrated that.

WFL and WHYB weren't big hits on urban radio at all, though. A few spins on some radio stations is not out of the norm for those types of songs by black artists. They never become big hits.
And no, Urban Adult Contemporary would pay "Diamonds" dust for sure.
