I do think WFL was risky, yes we had plenty of dance songs smashing but none with that structure much less with an unknown producer, I honestly thought it was going to flop when it debuted
After two, chart-topping and best-selling gospel albums....
...a secular, dance-pop single about partying until the break of dawn back in 2008 when dance was yet to reach the mainstream as it has now and GaGa was still up and coming...
Top 50 in the UK and Hungary. #1 US Dance radio, #4 US Dance.
If I Were a Boy is pretty risky, but it's DEFINITELY commercial. It's risky just because it was Beyonce's comeback song and everyone expected a BANGER from her.
There's nothing risky about If I Were A Boy, it borrows heavily from Irreplaceable which was a huge hit, how in the world could that be risky after the formula was already proven to be successful?

How is We Found Love risky? It's an electro-pop song that borrowed the dance breakdown that Party Rock Anthem and The Time (Dirty Bit) had already smashed with. The reason it was so successful was because it was fit for radio

I Will Never forgive her for stealing Wynter's Smash....
lordT i just read half of this thread and gave up, just because a single flopped doesn't make it risky. Run the world isnt risky. None of the singles mentioned in this thread really are
Gimme More was not risky, as it was nothing Nelly or Justin hadn't done.
Hold It Against Me was not risky, Kesha released it first. The dub break down gives the song a bit of an edge, but it would have been riskier if the whole song contained elements of dubstep.
We Found Love was not risky, it sounds like a hit and capitalized on Stereo Love, as well as other Euro dance songs that were trending in the US.
Born This Way was risky and it worked commercially, but failed critically. That song is NOT cool or even cute. Still, Gaga released something completely unlike her past work attached with the gay community.
Hung Up was risky, as it was released during an era of urban smashes in the US. As of today, the single is more relevant to current music than those songs. I believe the song was also a gigantic smash.
