Beyonce. I really wish I could choose Shakira, Alicia, or Pink, those are my 3 favs on the list but I don't think they're legends, at least not yet.

Well because she has a music career for more than a decade, has made some nice performances and has several #1 hits, musically she is from the same generation of Beyonce, Xtina, Britney, Pink , etc ........... but she is clearly losing the poll.

She may not be the best singer in the world but she is heavily accountable for almost all her music. She has been very much involved in her first five albums. Music videos, album direction and some writing credits here and there. She may not be as involved in her last 2 albums but she made the concept of Womanizer and Criminal for music videos. She wrote Scary for her 7th album. She was actually on track with her 7th album and wanted to work with Rusko, Diplo and other amazing producers but was scrapped by Jive because they wanted Brit's last album with them as radio friendly as it could be. Everything we saw in Britney's previous works are all her. She MADE the music she sings and she still continues to make music. She is very much involved with the process. She is not credited for such honors because she works in the back amazingly but not so much (now) on the outside. You see her in the outside as the entertainer who has weak vocals and now probably some weak choreography but the ordinary person never sees who makes the music. She is very very talented in making them and that's what made her a phenomenon. From Baby One More Time to Criminal.. We saw how much she had matured as an artist. 13 years in the biz and still making trends? Who else but Britney.

Why include Bey in the list of currents like Rihanna and Katy when she is having her underperforming era now...

Just like Bey, Britney is staying up with the currents so if you include Bey than I would include Pink and Britney in the mix too...I don't know why people want to discredit her when she is both an icon and a legend.

Pink has been consistent but she has only had one blockbuster album (selling 5x platinum) so consistently going platinum is good but nothing to really praise.

Anyways to me it is obvious:
Legends: Britney, Beyonce, Pink Alicia Keys each one of these legends are in their own lane. Hell, they could even be seen as having their own genre.

Britney and Beyonce are obvious...
Pink is like a dark horse but still is one...
Alicia proved that past the hype of her debut she can continue to make timeless records. Something I believe Beyonce lacks but Beyonce is a huger force so Queen Beyonce takes the top rank of R&B although Alicia has more soul, artistry and timeless records than Beyonce. Alicia is busy being a mother but if she were more into her career she would just continue adding on to her legendary status.


I'm sorry but Christina is no legend. What is sad is that she had everything to become a Legend but her career has messed that up. I mean someone made a point about JLO messing up her chances going on Idol...the voice isn't exactly helping people associate her as a relevant singer...her album sales and songs are not soaring up the chart (minus her feature on maroon 5' song). It's a shame because if Christina played her cards right her 2nd and 3rd album she could have sunk Britney under the rug and kept Beyonce at bay or been stiff competition for Beyonce and slaughtered Pink...
she striked out on all three.

Now JLO has already been discussed and is a legend for the latino community as far as celebrity/business but as far as acting/singing whatever...she isn't one. This is coming from someone who bought 80% of her albums.

Shakira...I see icon not legend but much stronger chances than JLO.

The other chicks need more time in the game and need to prove that they can maintain and sustain success after their peak and their hype dies down.
First up, Gaga...her next two records will determine if that will happen.
I'm sure Katy and Rihanna will soon follow, then adele and taylor.

People will always question her talent...even with youtube videos of her live singing, her involvement in key decisions that shifted her career, her impact, influence, ability to stay ahead of the curve and overall longevity and consistency in a genre that is known to be the most fickle...and this is with purely representing ONE genre, not multiples...She's not he most successful female artist of the 21st century for nothing.
Some will appreciate her...others won't...she is still a pop music ICON and LEGEND...

2004 she did have influence...Madonna even teamed up with the same producers that produced Toxic (Bloodshy and Avant) for her 2005 record. Keep in mind, hip hop was very big in 2003/4 and she put out Me against the music (a tired blah dance track that I grew to love but hated in the beginning) and Toxic when her record company wanted her to release 2 hip hop tracks as her first single.
2007 the eurodance underground electropop could be debated was it Rihanna with the ONE song Don't stop the music recorded before Blackout but released around the same time or was it Blackout with its theme being very european dance which shifted the r&b pop of the mid 2000s phase away from mainstream.

2011 Freakshow was a track that did have some dubstep influence before Rihanna's The wait is ova but I guess Hold it against has been deemed the first #1 hit with dubstep and now Rihanna, Madonna, and a couple of songs have had them and I'm sure will have them this year.

Also: the overproduced vocals were a trend, the urban pop of 2001-2003 became a trend...so on and so forth...

Irrelevant. For the most part she's still considered a pop legend for her immense impact on pop culture and pop music. Her impact is bigger than all the pop girls of this generation and she's outsold them all. Madonna wasn't and still isn't known for her vocals or dancing but more so her controversy and what she's done for pop music. Britney has iconic songs, performances, images, etc.

Any way. I was going to vote for Gaga but she's not on the list.

If people truly believe that having an exceptional vocal range is a requirement to being a legend then why are Diana Ross, Janet Jackson and Madonna legends

Music is different...where are the timeless songs in general...very few artist do them...doesn't take away from the various forms of pop music Britney has made to continue her 14+ year career. Ppl can't seriously want to disregard Diana, Madonna, Janet etc. vocal challenges but use it against Britney. You might not think her music catolog is impressive compared to Madonna but for our generation her catalog is impressive. Many don't even have the chance to have to create a 7th studio album let alone have 2-3 hits off of every album.
