Your personality/spirit isn't always a factor in success.

To be considered an iconic figure in 10 or so years you have to be. To really be loved you have to appeal both musically and in personality.

CKB, country influences, charted top 40... higher than songs from her contemporaries that will not be named. She performed the song on the CMAs with one Jennifer Nettles, one of the biggest names in country music at the moment. That's success in itself.
ManDown, charted #1 in some countries
Let's not forget that ManDown isn't her only song with strong reggae influences.

 Are you for real?
You have to take the case of Rihanna on its own, to try to figure out why she doesn't have a $100m+ grossing tour yet.
First, all of her tours are too short, they end after half-to-one-year. While Lady GaGa had 200+ shows on the span of two years.
Both Beyonce and Britney had much more time than Rihanna to have that $100m+ tour.
'Loud' could have been her first $100m tour if they didn't release TTT that early.
She doesn't have a #1 album in the United States. So? She still has plenty of time to get one.
Saying that she's not a Pop icon is just a damn lie and you know it. Everyone knows who Rihanna is. And actually, when you think of it. I'm glad she's famous because of her hit songs not because of her outrageous outfits.

RR has a guitar.
CKB was by all accounts a pop ballad.
ManDown was a flop.

- Every part of 'Americano'.
- Bloody Mary is good, actually.
- You and I defines the term 'corny'.
Etc, etc...

Whats corny about You & I? The fact that she wrote a song about the true love of her life?
But if ya'll are gonna compare compositions... GaGa wins hands down because she actually wrote her songs.... lyrics & melodies. No writing camps, no producers selling her songs, no reference tracks...

We love her Personality that's why we support her. The nerve of you saying she doesn't put her "personality" into her music. Could you be any more dense with your comment? Your desire to be a nuanced poster on ATRL is becoming more and more out of reach everyday as you always fall short when it comes to backing up your statements.

But fyi, SLANT basically doesn't like any popstar so it was only a matter of time. And they came hard.

Well I'm sure Rihanna has a mulit-faceted personality, just like the rest of us, she doesn't show that in the music.
All that may change in the coming years, if she chooses to become more hands on in the creative process.
Don't count her out, just yet.

Rihanna isn't shinning based off of her "talent". If her talent includes picking the right tunes that make the cut, than I guess I agree with you in some way.
|
If they didn't like Rihanna, they wouldn't buy her albums. AND YES. Her album sales are beyond great.

Pop Icons have the gorls hanging on their every word. Pop Icons have legions of fans who dress and try and emulate them.
I LOVE Rihanna but I've never once seen girls dressed like her... not even at her concerts.

Yes but you are a very small group, Gaga found love in the LGBT society, Madonna similarly.
Beyonce is more varied, but she has a loveable personality. To your Mr.Jones, Rihanna is a popstar and nothing more, she makes music, she's no recognisable cultural figure with any personality.

This means that she MUST be doing something right to have ppl talk about her constantly and riles people's feathers. With success comes hate, let's hope she continues.
|
WHAAAAAAT!?!? so because I'm not in every ****ing Britney related thread that talks negative about her that makes me less of a fan? what are you even implying?
And Rihanna isn't a staple, she was the it girl during the GGGB era but as soon as Gaga and Katy blew up it didn't take long for Rihanna to take a back seat to them, esp. Gaga -- now if she were able to compete with her peers then it wouldn't be a problem. Which the article also alludes to.
