Whether you want to believe it or not in terms of mainstream attention and the formats in which their music are played, all of those people are considered pop stars. Eminem was nominated for "pop/rock male of the year" for a reason. Being a rapper doesn't mean you aren't pop. Nor does singing R&B or country music. In comparison to most country and R&B artists Beyonce is considered pop as is Taylor Swift. Once you reach a certain level of success and can break genre barriers you can definitely be considered pop. Everyone else I mentioned is so blatantly pop it's ridiculous. You don't have to sing club or dance music to be a pop star. Pop is short for POPULAR afterall.

I'm sorry but I just don't understand this argument. Rihanna is a crossover artist. She is also urban. A lot more pop but she's definitely urban also, which if anything should give her an advantage since she attracts and gets support on both formats. Her last two #1's were Rude Boy and What's My Name both of which are blatantly R&B/reggae influenced songs and most of the push that allowed them to get so high came from the urban format.

And I do hope Chris Brown passes more than 180k although that's completely irrelevant. Like I said before for him, rebounding off of being shunned by majority of the population and coming from not being able to even pay to have his songs played, selling numbers like that would be reason to celebrate. Not for Rihanna.

see, now this is a better worded statement.

it's true & even though she had hits before the album, the last era did lose her a lot of the momentum she had with GGGB overall. but even then, her sales could be higher so idk.what she lacks in US sales she'll more than make up for in WW sales just like P!nk, while other artists will have huge US sales and not that great WW.

it just depends b/c artists sell differently.

That doesn't change the fact that she's labeled as a POP ARTIST

So if she has one or two songs on an album that have the support of URBAN radio, then that won't get people to buy the whole album, they will just get those songs.

That's very true, but I feel like after the hype and huge success from the GGGB era, Rated R came and it was a slightly disappointing commercial success.

Had she released Loud after GGGB, I think she might have had the chance at #1 with a possible 250-300K

A singles artist really is someone who can only sell singles which would be the Jason Derulo/Taoi Cruz (as much as I love him)/Jay Sean's and Sean Kingston's.

Rihanna's hit single to album ratio may be off but 200,000 is still a decent amount of people going out.
