Everything.
All Oricon physical receipts ever published are used, except in the case of First Love for which I used the accepted worldwide figure. EDIT: I did the same to any Ayu album if applicable.
Both girls' digital certifications are used, because certifications of digital tracks are sales. I personally sifted through the RIAJ records.
Digital sales reported in
this article are used for Heart Station's tracks, and "Boku wa Kuma" (I subtracted one 100k certification from "Boku wa Kuma" that would have been included in that total).
I scoured the internet for any Soundscan info on Utada.
I made sure to count every physical Ayumi rerelease in addition to initial releases.
And now that I say all that, I just realized I
may have underestimated Utada, hold on a moment.
EDIT: someone please clarify whether the barks.jp article is in reference to ALL digital sales, or just PC sales. The result depends on it.
