BBB was a hit. It was not a smash. Even YLIMD was not a smash. It was a big hit.

This isn't only for Ke$ha. The same goes for GaGa's singles. She has had 3 smashes. Telephone can arguably be called a smash since it topped the United World Chart.

A smash to me is any single that is close to 2x platinum or higher. But everyone has a different interpretation of what a "smash" is

Yes but for example I don't feel LoveGame was a smash. It went #1 on POP, Top 5 on the Hot 100, and yet it felt like a hit, not a smash. I guess it's subjective.

BBB was a smash, regardless of how it did on radio. In fact, it's all the more impressive that BBB is so close to 2 million when it didn't have a lot to support its sales.

I agree.

I don't think LoveGame was a smash either, but it could be defined as one in the US. I don't like LoveGame, and it flopped in the UK so I tend to forget it. Her weakest single IMO.

I think it's songs like "Telephone" that are difficult to gauge in terms of whether they should be called smashes or just hits.

It went Top 3 on Hot 100, #1 on POP, #1 on United World Chart, sold over 2M copies on iTunes (all without being performed in the U.S.), was the 6th consecutive single, but there was still this air of "it should have done better."

LoveGame was a smash to me. It passed double platinum status, went #1 on pop, & it's still charting in the top charts of iTunes to this day. Not to mention the phrase disco stick has become rather popular, if you want social impact

One thing I don't get, is how BBB flopped on radio, but not iTunes. If people didn't like the song from radio, why did people continue to buy the song off iTunes? Serious question. I've never seen a song flop on radio but do well on iTunes.

When BBB was riding high on iTunes it was having smash radio updates, then it stalled on both formats.

Maybe it was just doing well initially due to the buzz built up by Tik Tok, or maybe it was just the exact opposite of a grower. Who knows.

Ke$ha singles sell no matter how they do on radio. MFK has disastrous airplay #s yet it is top twenty on iTunes

Justin Bieber songs also get pathetic airplay. Yet his singles still sell well.

Telephone was not a smash in the US IMO because it never lived up to the huge expectations that were placed upon it. It was expected to be a huge seller and to ultimately peak at number one, it didn't do either. Its sales were mediocre in the end, it got a good chart peak and I'm happy with that, but I think most of her fans were disappointed that it didn't top the Hot 100.

MFK is top 15 on Pop, that's hardly disastrous and matches up with the iTunes position imo.
