I think that every pop-star has their sex appeal and beauty in their own way. But some of them don't necessarily use it while performing and stuff. For example there are female singers who don't have to undress themselves while performing their songs. It's all relative tho, they can all use their sexy body to sell themselves, it's up to us and our way to perceive that.

Women can absolutely be successful without sex appeal. For some reason it's just not a route that's taken.

Male artists take advantage of sex appeal too. Usher did it all the time in the past and even now his singles OMG and Lil Freak are sexed up lyrically. Chris Brown used sex appeal too.

Again, I'll repeat what I've been saying in this thread, I think that the music industry has become so twisted, that it's nearly impossible for a woman to be successful without using some type of sex in her music, image, etc. It's kind of expected from females, if you think about it. If a woman decided she was going to dress like, say, an Amish woman 24/7, in all of her performances, videos, etc. and wasn't even going to show her leg to anyone, do you really think the music industry would embrace her and allow her to be successful? No. Music today, for the most part, is all about sex. It sells, and people are eating it up.

And Taylor Swift has proven that you don't need a sex appeal. All you need is a dedicated fanbase of teenage girls.

Well, do you think that there is a difference between the phrases "sex sells" and "sex appeal"? Because, as I am seeing it, sex appeal is when you are appealing to people because of your sex. Sex selling, on the other hand, is being avant-garde in order to attract attention.

IDK. Its prolly a difference so insignificant like saying PO-TAE-TO and PO-TA-TOE. But I don't really think that people are more inclined to buy her stuff based on her sexiness.

Susan Boyle, Lady Gaga, Bette Midler, Celine Dion ..they have zero sex appeal but manage to capture audience interests in diff ways.
Susan Boyle- average voice but audience love her story and her frumpy look works for her
Lady Gaga- again avg voice and looks but her crazy attire and antics on stage has gained her many fans
Bette Midler- she has the voice, humor and talent , she's also a great comic actress, who cares if she dont have 'the look'
Celine Dion- she has the voice of an angel ...nothing else need to be said.
