Award shows are always known for the performances and what drama goes on. If nothing interesting went on, then nothing is discussed. If you asked somebody if Selena had a VMA or not they wouldn't know the answer, if you asked if they knew about Miley's performance, they would.

And no, nobody in the GP cares about sales or who wins fan-voted awards (idk why you think the chance of one being brought up is so 'important' or why you brought that up in the first place when I was talking about Miley fans caring about sales) but they do know about hit songs which leads to knowing about albums which goes back to sales being important for an artist's exposure.
