@5:25 when she points the mic to the audience you can hear the person scream "ima **** me up a bitch" and then at the end when she drops the mic.... the thump... her mic was clearly on.
I'm still speechless. Truly one of the best perfromances in the history of the VMAs. We can argue about iconicity and whether it's going to be remembered or not, but quality-wise, this was truly sth else (even for Bey standards).

This is the part I was telling swissman about! Her mic was on, she almost missed that lyric and almost forgot to censor it. That's how I knew she was singing along with the backing track, up until Sorry when she clearly started lipping.
A great comment I found on Youtube concerning this performance:

The reason why I love Beyoncé couldn't have been explained better through this performance. Her athleticism as a performer is phenomenal, her awareness of the camera AT ALL TIMES making sure to give the audience an entertaining show at home, ridiculous stage presence, and the effective use of technology/lighting and the stage show you this is unmatched in this industry. This performance validates that. The precision is just brilliant. She's not afraid to grow, experiment, push herself and that's what makes her so inspiring as an artist and woman. In an industry dominated by men she still triumphs and dominates wherever she goes. Her talent, hard work, amazing team have officially created a performing legend that will become one of the most iconic and memorable artists of all time. The audience roaring reaction for almost 1 minute after the performance said it all. This performance was Beyoncé officially taking her seat at the legends table - and rightly so.

Was anything pure live though? Backing track, lipping... Very odd

She definitely mimed like 50% of the performance.Bey has always incorporated a mixture of pre-recorded vocals and live vocals into most of her big performances, thats why she's so convincing. She'll start a song live or end it live or throw in live ad libs, or do a mixture of all 3. (See Grammys DIL where she messes up the end of second verse and her vocals play without her singing).
The 1st verse of hold up was live, the rest wasn't and one typical give away with her is that she always covers her mouth briefly when she lips and there isn't choreography to distract from it. When she speaks to the crowd before formation you can hear her breathiness, something absent the minute she starts singing which is like 1 second later. She also delivers that line crisper here than she has throughout the entire formation tour despite that being the opening number versus it being the closing one here (she should be more exhausted).
