You could argue that she is using them for her own benefit, or perhaps if we are to take it at face value then perhaps she is only mentioning this now in light of how big an issue gay teen suicide has been recently. Conceited or not, it's not going to do people any harm. In fact, it might help some people feel better about themselves.
