The only issue is that most people don't really care about release dates so it might not really save the industry but give it the little shake it needs to get exciting again. Who knows? Maybe putting so much work for one global week might be too taxing for some record companies that lack the resources.

It's not just Australia that has albums released on Friday, it's also Germany, Switzerland, Austria and some other European countries.

I think moving everything to a Friday would prevent some sales losses but in the end I don't really think it would change THAT much.

I mean if you don't want to spend your coins the latest you can donwload the album for free will be on release date anyway so yeah....but I understand that someone won't buy an album anymore if he has to wait 4 more days after a leak.

This won't happen instantly. There will be a transition period where a few countries change their release dates, followed by a few others. The main goal for singles through a global release date is to roll out the on air, on sale model in every country to stop piracy. Whereas markets such as the UK have their own model where radio plays a song for 6 weeks and people pre-order it, resulting in big first week numbers and gradual decreases until the song falls out of the chart. A sudden change in July 2015 is unrealistic because it would kill the UK market as every song released here via on air on sale (e.g. Notorious by The Sats, Wild by Jessie J, Beat of My Drum by Nicola Roberts, Applause by Gaga) has either flopped or under-performed (Wild and Applause peaked at #5 but this peak position pales in comparison to each artist's previous lead single's peak position).

I don't see this being in place for another few years at least. For albums it works, but not for singles.

Yeah... but when albums are released 2/3 days earlier in certain territories, then people are obviously going to upload them (especially when they've gotten them legally).

It would cut it down, as everywhere can buy something on iTunes the same day as everybody else and wouldn't have a massive need or want to upload them.

I think it's common knowledge it was her idea to do a surprise release. Columbia has stated already that they only gave her the green light cause she's Beyoncé.

Well timed after Beyonce showed how to cut the middle men and sell her album directly through iTunes. And streaming (all you can eat subscriptions) is picking up to render buying music obsolete.

Katy said in 2008 "File sharing is inevitable," and knows how to sell merchandise and tickets.
