Beginning Monday, September 15
OutKast, "Hey Ya!"
Coldplay, "God Put a Smile upon Your Face"
Pharrell featuring Jay-Z, "Frontin'"
David Bowie, "New Killer Star"
John Mayer, "Bigger Than My Body"
Dave Matthews, "Gravedigger"
Fuel, "Falls on Me"
Dido, "White Flag"
Luther Vandross, "Dance with My Father"
Ashanti, "Rain on Me"
Fuel and Dido are the other 2 on that list to debut. And I can't remember when "Hey Ya!" debuted on the countdown, but I remember "The Way You Move" debuting in the Top 10 for the first countdown of 2004.
Here's what to expect next week:
* THREE countdown debuts:
>> One from a band that once asked Chris Daughtry to be their frontman (obviously, he declined).'
>> Another from the current Mrs. Carter featuring a Jamaican rapper (and which thus makes for two artists having two different videos on the countdown).
>> And a third one from a lovely English chanteuse named after a mythical Queen of Carthage.
* And sadly, three videos leave the countdown, all from strong female solo artists.
Fall-Offs:
Thalía featuring Fat Joe, "I Want You" [8 weeks / #16 / Peak: 10]
Jennifer Lopez, "Baby I Love You" [6 weeks / #17 / Peak: 13]
Mary J. Blige featuring Method Man, "Love @ 1st Sight" [4 weeks / #18 / Peak: 17]
VH1 Music Video Adds for the Week
Beginning Monday, September 22
Dixie Chicks, "Top of the World"
School of Rock, "School of Rock"
Mandy Moore, "Have a Little Faith in Me"
Kelly Clarkson, "Low"
Uncle Kracker, "Memphis Soul Song"
Here's what to expect for next week:
* A spankin' new #1 video (and I think many of you won't expect it to be the one it is!)
* Once again, THREE countdown debuts, including:
>> A "live" performance video by The Love Below.
>> A video by an Irish singer-songwriter, winner of the Shortlist music prize in 2002.
>> A Santana collabo that originally, in its album version, featured Chad Kroeger of Nickelback.
* And, of course, we say goodbye to three videos in the countdown, all of which peaked in the Top 2.
Santana + OutKast
And Jason Mraz FINALLY at #1 after all these weeks!!!
Here's what to expect for next week:
* We start off October with a countdown debut from a country group that later on got into hot water for making unflattering comments about President George W. Bush.
* And sadly we say goodbye to one video (one of the best from 2003), which is "going back to the stars."
And this week's debuts:
Santana featuring Alex Band, "Why Don't You and I"
If anyone is wondering about the clue for this video, here's the full story: Chad Kroeger recorded "Why Don't You & I" for Santana's CD Shaman, and that is the version that appears in the CD. However, by the time Arista Records wanted to release "WDY&I" as a single, Nickelback was also about to release The Long Road (where "Someday" is). Roadrunner Records, Nickelback's label, was worried that Chad Kroeger appearing on another high-profile artist's single would hurt sales for Nickelback's new album, and so they refused to let them release the song with Chad Kroeger's vocals. Thus, Arista scrambled to re-record the song with a replacement vocalist recommended by Kroeger, Alex Band from The Calling, and this then became the single version. Later pressings of the album, though, kept the Chad Kroeger version, and the Alex Band one was not available on a CD until a later compilation album, Ceremony: Remixes and Rarities. Pretty interesting, huh?
