Basically, each country from Europe sends a musical act to perform and represent their country. There are semi-finals to eliminate countries that suck and 26 countries make it to the final (which is one of the most watched shows in Europe). They all perform on one Saturday night, voting opens for 20 minutes where you vote for your favorites (can't vote for your own country though), and then the results are revealed with the country with the highest votes getting 12 points and lowest just 1. It's a mix of a jury/public vote so there are a lot of politics going on.

Most of the time they play it very safe. I'm glad the Conchita risk paid off.

Hmm but it's all about neighboring countries giving 12s to each other. I mean, Russia getting booed yesterday was part of the political nature of Eurovision.
It's cooled down now thanks to the jury but still.
