"I Hate This Part" (2009) Doll Domination
Hot 100 Peak: #11
Overall score: 7.35 High score: 10 (3x)/Low score: 2 (1x)
Is there any more polarizing Pussycat Dolls songs than "I Hate This Part"? Fans regard the piano-driven heartbreak ballad as the group's greatest stab at respectability, while haters find it to be an overblown, screechy mess. Most voters seemed to fall in the former camp—personally, I find all the melodrama to be a delicious guilty pleasure—but a couple of very low scores sunk its chances in this rate.
The song is amazing. But this song is one song where you could easily rename the pussycat dolls as Nicole and the Pussycats.

After two #1 smashes, FanMail's third single—the soft and sensitive "Dear Lie," which like most TLC ballads, veers considerably into pop territory—failed to much of an impact on the charts, despite a lovely acoustic guitar line and an instantly relatable concept. Similarly, it rated much lower in this game than "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty," neither of which will be seen for quite a while.
This song is amazing. I mean, the words aren't really the best part of the song but the chorus is very powerful and full of emotions. Should've been a BIT higher than this.
Sorry for the lack of updates tonight! I have a paper due, so I'm finishing that up. I'll make up for it with extra reveals tomorrow—maybe take it all the way to the top 20?
In the mean time, a few hints to hold you over: Early TLC will take a hit and half of Destiny's Child's remaining songs will be cut. We'll also say goodbye to the last of the Pussycat Dolls tracks.
Damn, you really don't like TLC, do you, Playboy? Ha ha!
I actually enjoy T-Boz's raspiness; it's distinctive and soulful and has a lot of character. I think it's often the imperfections that makes someone's singing more interesting.
I love Left Eye, she is in my Top 5 of favorite female rappers of all time. I don't completely hate TLC because Left Eye's solo material sucks ass so I'm forced to enjoy her within the group. I love Diggin On U & Red Light Special.... but maybe cuz I'm a freak Creep is tolerable, reminds me of a Janet song. That is all I can take from T Boz without the others.
Oh I'm all for imperfections..... I love Brandy, Amerie, Kelis, Keri, Alicia, Keyshia, Rihanna etc. T Boz on a good song can give me alto husky Janet but on a regular song, she just gives me sandpaper & acid.

The true Queens surviving the next round unscathed like the royalty they are.

I can't stop laughing right now! You know how to take a bitch DOWN. But we'll just have to agree to disagree, because TLC is and always will be my ish.

Oh, no one is escaping unscathed. It's just that Playboy seems to be the only actually here for En Vogue, so using them to get people excited for the next set is like trying to sell a movie on Jennifer Aniston's name.
I guess I'm alone in living and breathing for TLC's later stuff, which makes for a very limited Left Eye--probably because I enjoy me some Chilli the most out of the three girls. I love Creep, Waterfalls, and No Scrubs and Red Light Special and Unpretty are two of my favorite songs on this whole rate. Chilli's solo on RLS is fire.
I never found Left Eye to be a great rapper or lyricist, which is probably why I'm not too keen on any of TLC's earlier stuff. I think her little solo on Waterfalls is thought-provoking and a solid addition to the song, but I don't think it's particularly clever or revolutionary.

If Jolie's Lips ever came out of SYG, he would be proud of your shade.

Everyone should be here for En Vogue. Their remaining songs are completely flawless.

I agree with this sentiment. Of course, Don't Let Go is on another level though. That one's a masterpiece. But I guess Free Your Mind follows pretty closely at its heels. And the video for FYM? AMAZING.

Let us not forget My Lovin', either. All flawless, tbqh.

I like you!!! You don't get offended by a differing opinion.
"Bug a Boo" (1999) The Writing's on the Wall
Hot 100 Peak: #33
Overall score: 7.50 High score: 10 (1x)/Low score: 4 (1x)
Beyoncé & Co.'s ferocious takedown of desperately clingy boys was a modest success on the charts and in this game. Though its stuttering drum machine beat is an impressive hook—arguably one of Destiny's Child's best—"Bug a Boo" always seems to be the forgotten bridge between the group's first two #1 hits. All but three of its scores were crowded in the 7-8 range.
How can the flawless Bug A Boo be eliminated so fast?!

You're definitely not alone. FanMail was the TLC that I first discovered, so I will always have a soft spot for their later work. ("Unpretty" remains one of my favorite songs ever.)
But I also love their sultry R&B sound on CrazySexyCool. That album is an experience of its own, and the singles are flawless. And this rate has made me realize how awesome TLC was on their first album, too. I'd never heard much from it before, but I find the whole b-girl vibe and Left Eye's raps to be fantastic. As Ace said, there were just so cool back then.

"Too Gone, Too Long" starts as a silky smooth slow jam, but by the end, it has built to a dramatic gospel ballad that feels like a sermon of independence for all the abandoned single ladies out there. Perhaps the sheer power of the vocals and orchestral composition helped make it the highest-ranking of En Vogue's late-career singles as a trio.
"Do You Want Me" (1991) Black's Magic
Hot 100 Peak: #21
Overall score: 7.58 High score: 10 (1x)/Low score: 5 (1x)
This conversational rap track features another great message from the classy ladies of Salt-n-Pepa, as they remind the dirty fellas who just want their bodies that they won't be giving it up so easy. Sampling James Brown's "Say It, I'm Black and I'm Proud," it's got a funky bass riff—and a hook sung by men, quite the novelty for this rate.
