Very few people who get lasik do it because they think they will look better after.

#1 Reason: Convenience - Not having to keep track of glasses to do every day tasks makes life so much simpler. Same goes for contacts.

#2 Reason: Need - Some peoples eyes get to the point where they cannot make glasses/contacts that will make their vision 20/20. This drastically decreases quality of life.

Firstly, it's not an opinion nor ignorance.

1. You think society should pay for "convenience"? If that's the case, society should pay for me to have a car since it's inconvenient for me to take public transportation.

2. There is no greater "need" for lasik eye surgery. In fact, it is recommended for people to get glasses as they age.

Also, I hope you all arguing in this thread realize Medicare only covers people aged 65 and older so I don't think any of you have Medicare anyway so this doesn't apply to you. Medicaid is for people with low income.

Yes it is completely ignorant. You claim (with no evidence) that Lasik is a cosmetic surgery. This is ignorant AND a lie.

2. Your completely ignored my point. Congrats on your ability to ignore what you cannot accept. The purpose of Lazik is not to remove the need to glasses (it rarely is successful at this long term), but to make it so that you can function without them if you need to.

Nowhere did the website say that CLINICAL DEPRESSION was a symptom of the disorder, just feelings of depression, nor did it say that surgery was the number one cure. In fact, surgery was barely mentioned.

Medicare is mostly for people over the age of 65, so I don't think it's really fair to complain about how a portion of your salary is going to cover a surgery you believe to be elective.

I do think there are other surgeries that should be covered before this one was -- surgeries that would benefit trans and non-trans people alike.

There are plenty of people who get severely depressed and/or bullied over their breast size though.
