Pedro's 2015 Reflection: The Singles (10-01) - The E.N.D.
Talkin' to my own R E F L E C T I O N
Alright! We are off to the biggest and most important category: the singles. It was quite a year when it comes to singles releases (Hello, Britney & Rihanna!) and that is why I had to make the biggest single collection I've ever done in a best of.
Well, here we are! The final ten! I am really excited about this last part because it literally shapes my musical taste during 2015. It was such a good year and I am really proud of my top 10 as it includes some songs that surely will be part of my life's soundtrack... Here we go!
10. Selena Gomez - Same Old Love
|
We kick things off with Selena Gomez! She had a late release but kind of dominated the charts with her singles. 'Same Old Love', out of the three, was the one I did not love automatically. I found it a little bit out of what I was expecting from her, it was not exactly a slow sexy song à la 'Good For You' nor a dance smash à la 'Slow Down' so I had to get used to it. After some time... Forget my initial doubts! This song was constantly in my head and I just love how stripped down it is and how much attitude she has in it: "... TAKE away your things and go!" Yas! Tell him, Selena! This was surely a surprise and a sleeper-hit, it came slowly and it blew up! I was proud! I also have to point out how unique it sounds and talk about how people always say you barely listen to her during the chorus.. Are you deaf?

09. Hilary Duff - My Kind
|
Hilary Duff could've had such a smash era if she (and her label) had put the right effort into it... 'My Kind' is such a cute and perfect Pop song. It is so catchy, so fresh, so tropical, so unique (well, you know what I mean) and I am glad it managed to be a (ignored) single. I love how it is so easy-going and how its lyrics aren't supposed to be that serious as she is basically talking about a one night stand that COULD turn into something serious. This doubt during the entire song makes it so interesting and I just love how it never really comes clean ( ). She is pretending not to care but she is hoping they may be together. I love this!

08. Selena Gomez - Good For You (feat. A$AP Rocky)
|
This was such an unexpected and fresh single choice and I would have never imagined Selena Gomez to release something like this. 'Good For You' was the best thing that could have happened to her music career. Not only she proved how versatile she can be by playing with different music genres but that she has a very sensual voice and tone, that she is now more mature, is riskier and has more to offer. Being riskier (SOMETIMES) pay off and it did for her. For me, this was her real breakthrough. I do admit that I was quite shocked this became the hit it became... Even my mother said the song was quite good, wow! This may be one of the sexiest singles of the last years! Princess Selena is not playing around.

07. Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself
|
The real follow-up of 'Good For You'. This song is so sexy and has this tribal vibe attached to it. I love how, just like the other two, the song is so stripped down and her voice is free of effects. She may have a very small voice but it works so well in this type of music. I feel like Selena Gomez has found her comfort zone and what she can work with. Once again, Selena decided to release a very fresh and unique song allowing her to slay again. The song has just begun its conquer and will be dominating sooner or later! Mark my words! Let's focus on the amazing: "I mean I could but why would I want to?" I just live for that part!

06. Shawn Mendes - I Know What You Did Last Summer (feat. Camila Cabello)
|
My Princess! Camila Cabello! I love her so much. She is so unique, so beautiful and so special. This song is such a radio-friendly song and I love every bit of it (Camila's parts the most, of course). It has this nostalgic yet fresh vibe. I love how she feels every bit of this song and how those "Ahh, Heee-EEy!" make this song so freaking catchy. I am glad it managed to become a moderate hit for the Queen as this Fifth Harmony scandal is probably too much for her and she needs to breathe fresh air as well (but I don't want to see Queens breaking up this soon). As for Shawn Mendes, I just paid attention to him after this one, 'Stitches' is good!

BONUS: Katy Perry - Everyday Is a Holiday
|
I don't include this season songs in Best Ofs but I had to make a special place for this great Katy Perry song. Everyone knows how much I like this woman and how I feel like she releases great pop music. 'Everyday Is a Holiday' is so catchy and so faithful to Katy's repertoire so I don't even consider it to be a season song! That's how good it is! |
05. Giorgio Moroder - Tom's Diner (feat. Britney Spears)
|
You didn't think I'd forget my Queen, Britney Spears, did you? You probably didn't expect her to be lower than top 3 as well but, as I said, it was a great year. This featuring was very unexpected and I would never expect it to be a cover but, as usual, Britney Spears slayed it. She sounds so good in the majority of her covers. The new melody of the song is just great and Giorgio did an AMAZING job in the production, it sounds 10,000 times better than the original (I know I am not the best one to compare). I know this has nothing to do with Britney or Giorgio but I genuinely love the lyrics of this song. I believe if this song had been given the single treatment could've become 'Scream & Shout' pt. II.

04. Britney Spears - Pretty Girls (feat. Iggy Azalea)
|
Of course I madly love this song but there were songs that spoke closer to my heart this year and this is why I had to leave the legendary Britney Spears out of the race 'this' soon. 'Pretty Girls' is such a fun and amazing song and it was surely one of the soundtracks of my 2015. I love every bit of it and how it brought urban Britney back. Iggy also had an amazing part of it, her part in the bridge is quite flawless. People keep on comparing it to 'Fancy' but, to be honest, 'Pretty Girls' remains unbothered. I feel like 'Pretty Girls' could've performed way better without Iggy but, at the end of the day, she was the reason why it was released so... I am all for Iggy. It has this type of anthem sound! Anyway, such an underrated jem!

03. Carly Rae Jepsen - Your Type
|
This song is so good, so heartfelt and so emotional. It gives me this nostalgic vibe since she is remembering her old relationship. It is a sad song overall as she acknowledges she is not the one for him. It breaks my heart when she goes like: "I'll make time for you". The production is flawless (just like the entire album) and the instrumental is actually pretty, pretty nice. I love it. Besides all the good things about it, I love when she kind of talks before the final chorus as it looks like she is been given her last chance to do so. It is surely one of the highlights of 'Emotion'.

02. Elhaida Dani - I'm Alive
|
I remember perfectly this being the first song I heard from Eurovision Song Contest 2015 and thinking: "Wow! This is pretty good!" But I would never have thought this would become my favorite song ever from Eurovision or such a special song to me. I love the midtempo rhythm and Elhaida's vocals slay me each time. Up until today, everytime I play this song I have to pause it and go on Youtube to check it live as I can't believe she hits such huge notes during the final part and, believe me, each time I get chills all over my body. This song is very sad though as she basically says she knows she's alive as he broke her heart and she can feel it. Elhaida released a beautiful song and I am so shocked at how powerful this song is and became to me. I will never get past the fact it was robbed though.

01. Fifth Harmony - Worth It (feat. Kid Ink)
|
It was not even a question. 'Worth It' was always meant to be my #1 song of the year. It was so special, it was MY song of the year. I played it so many times, I requested it so many times everytime I went out, I watched every single performance that was made out of it, I memorized all the moves, I memorized every single bit of the lyrics. It was my song, it is my anthem, it is my 2015. This song allowed Fifth Harmony to become my fave act of 2015 and one of my all-time faves. This song was the reason I went to Paris see them live and even pay a Meet&Greet ticket to see them. It made me go back to the stan life and I am SO proud of how big it became. It surely was one of the highlights of the year and I could not be more proud of my girls. They owned the year, they slayed my life and they released one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. Fifth Queens.
