If i'm not mistaken, it means that each time iTunes updates, it's counting the sales of the past 24hs. Which means that if an album goes #1 in lets say, 10 minutes after the release, it means that it has sold more in those 10 minutes than the previous #1 did in the whole 24hs!

It's much more complicated than that. It's mainly sales from the past 24 hours but it also factors in sales from last week and from last month etc just weighted a lot less than recent sales.
