well in pokemon heartgold you can transfer pokemons after beating the first gym leader i think

I could trade Pokémon in HeartGold right away, but you need to be able to catch some first, so that is right after your 'rival' (the other gender character) showed you how to catch Pokémon and gave you some Pokéballs.

With mareep and a water Pokémon like Poliwag (-> Poliwrath, water/fight) you should be alright, however, you might wanna add a Psychic type like Espeon or Kadabra/Alakazam if you have access to two Gameboys
For water type. Choose lapras! It's awesome! Ice beam and surf are sure fire moves!

My only problem with SoulSilver is that the wild Pokemon are ridiculously underlevelled. I ended up underlevelled before the 8th gym and haven't played since.
