I'm not a religious person and I don't believe in prayers having an effect BUT when someone says prayers they mean that they sympathize with the victims and care about them. It fosters unity.

Can't speak for Judaism, but I'm Christian and pretty much 100% pro gay rights and have zero issues with homosexuality. My religious beliefs say God made everyone perfect as is (which I believe. You're either born that way, or it's caused by experience. But either way, you don't have control over it. So there are definitely non-homophobic Christians out there. Even some of the ones that aren't particularly for "gay stuff" (for lack of a better term) don't necessarily act in homophobic ways (they basically realize that, while they don't agree, gay people are still people worthy of respects and rights to live a life the way they want to since it's not right to impose one's religion)

I think it's pointed out because most religions don't actually have passages advocating war to spread their rule. That's not to say it hasn't been done, just that its followers aren't actively encouraged to do so. Thus why I say I have issues with Islam (religion), but not Muslims (people) unless specific followers give me reason to have issues with them (Isis, for example)
