That's not true. The 1960s is one of the most-celebrated times in music history and plenty of the artists that competed with, overlapped with, or directly influenced the Beatles are still cherished and highly regarded: The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Doors, James Brown, Pink Floyd, Elvis, CCR, etc.
The Beatles were unarguably the most successful of all of them, so they're naturally seen as figureheads of the era. I don't think most people believe they were alone in developing the sound and structure of rock in the 1960s.
