I don't think Katy Perry will debut at #1 next week. She's not that big. I think she'll take a few weeks to climb to #1, like We Found Love did.
fun. probably won't go to #1, because its airplay isn't that high at the moment, but it must surely go top 10 with these sales!

She is big enough selling singles but I don't see the hype she needs.

I'd dare to say, more than any other genre. They also sell tons of albums - last year a rock band blocked BTW for a few weeks even when the radio *****d BTW (the song) and it was supposed to be the biggest and most anticipated release of the year.

Old people like rock music in the US. The young people generally like rap/pop.

Naw I think there are plenty of young people who like rock music. However, there is a common attitude among its fans that anything worth listening to has already been recorded and all music that comes out nowadays it trash. I mean I am a bit of a video gamer myself so I hang out on gaming forums and they literally have no love at all for any modern music.
(also hurts that the 16-30 male demographic also heavily pirates their music making it almost impossible to track what they are actually listening to)

Fun. could jump to #2-#3 if they were to open with 300k+, as it took Kelly only 295 points to top this week's chart. Her airplay will be up though, so she'll strengthen the top points. They'd have to do 315-320k to guarantee.
And Katy is that big, I'd say. She has four 5-million sellers, with a few of them still selling well at this very moment. If the new single is to premiere at Grammys, released to iTunes/radio afterwards, she actually could. The thing that would hurt isn't whether she's big or not, but if consumers will flock to new Katy so soon after the huge era.

This attitude really irks me, because it could not be any more accurate. I cannot tell you how much people at my school think that all pop music is automatically awful because it was recorded in the past 5 years.

I don't think Katy will get to #1 because SFttR is going to become an absolute behemoth.

Katy's pretty huge digitally, but IDK.The TD era has obviously already run its course & then some, but we'll see.
Plus we all know how effective Adele's live performances are, despite them being so few & far-between. A few wins in the major categories would give her an added boost too.

I feel like Adele will benefit more with 21 sales, than "SFTTR" getting a huge boost actually. We'll see, though.

I did note that that's the only thing that could hold her back. If the public is tired of her after the last year and a half. But it is a new song, debuted on a major platform..and we know the pop fans will flock regardless.

Yeah with 294k copies sold. Then she went into the Summer, 269k; 318k; 353k; 337k in a row. And all of that before she became the biggest digital artist of recent. Nothing was going to knock "OMG" off without heavy airplay+sales combination, the same that might happen with this new one if Adele indeed boosts with "SFTTR".

Of course Katy is big.. But it doesn't exist the big HYPE, she still has an amazing hit that it's still listening (TOTGA).. But we'll see, we know she is a Digital and Airplay monster
I think she will debut at #3.. Behind 'Dele and Kelly

I don't really know anybody my age (I'm 19) that likes rock music anymore, but I do remember during the 2003-2007 rock music was quite popular with my age group, but those same people which used to like Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance, listen to Party Rock Anthem now.
However, I do think rock is probably the most popular genre still. Whenever you see a poll somewhere on the Internet which goes like "What is your favourite genre?", rock always seems to win, and usually hip hop comes 2nd.
