This is a musical, not an action-packed blockbuster. And have you seen the 'competion', like HP and Tangled? I would say it's doing quite nice for this type of movies.

Yes. It has tough competition to put up this weekend but the movie gets rave reviews and the word of mouth should be catching up around people by now. It also has big names in the film.

Unfortunately, the critics have been quite 'brutal' about Burlesque (32 on Rotten Tomatoes)

But yes, it's getting great word of mouth. And that's good for longevity. So I think so far it's doing good, not excelent or surprisingly well, but good. Too soon to say it 'underperformed' since we're still on the first week

Burlesque may be facing stiff competition from Harry Potter and Tangled, but the movie musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera is on its way to making $18 million dollars over the five day holiday frame.

The film, which marks Cher’s first starring role since 1999’s Tea With Mussolini, is expected to take in more than $12 million opening weekend. Burlesque already took in $5 million on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cher’s previous best opening weekend was for The Witches of Eastwick in 1987.

The film cost $50 million to produce and should make that money back in its stateside release. The film is expected to do better in its international release next month.
