Pay the original, PSone RE DUST.

it's only good if you have nostalgia with its extremely corny dialouge / scenes.
RE2 is something you MUST play. It's the best in the series, it mixes Horron with Action perfectly and it has that old school gameplay but not the extremely cheesy dialouge of RE1. It's just perfect.
RE3 is...okay. The story is so basic and bland that you will cry, but Nemesis will give you nightmares, that's for sure. This game is more focused towards Action, too.
REMAKE is the best example of what a modern RE should be like. You must play this masterpiece, too bad you can only play it on a GC / Wii
RE: CV has one of the best stories of RE, but the gameplay is clunky.
RE0 is nothing really special, but it defiently gives that co-op feel from the newer RE's. it's also based on the same REmake engine, which is always a good thing.
That covers the old canon old RE's
RE: Umbrella Chronicles is rail-shooters that is also canon (Rebecca, Wesker, Ada and Jill/Chris chapters) they are really fun honestly. It feels like a movie, but it will probably bore you if you don't like being able to explore and stuff.
RE: Darkside Chronicles revisits the awesomeness of RE2/CV but with updated grpahics and it's just

, this also includes a canon Leon/Krauser pre-lude to RE4 scenario.
RE: Revelations is quite awesome actually, it's the most horror focused, over-the-shoulder game
That covers the canon spin-offs
RE4 is a masterpiece. The best from the new generation RE's. simple as that.
RE5 is good for what it is, an action game, but a quite bad RE game.
RE6 is honestly awesome, despite some clunky controls, it actually has the best writing.
That covers the new canon games
