When I first saw the trailer last year, I thought it looked like a hit. Not a Transformers-sized hit, but something that would attract enough of that audience to open to $60M and finish with like $180M. I'm watching it tonight
Well, maybe Avengers left people with no money? I mean, literally every one went to see Avengers within these two weeks, and knowing the US economy and the ticket costs... It could have had an effect.

I dont think so. Sherlock Holmes opened a couple weeks after Avatar (which was even bigger than Avengers), got blocked from #1, but still made over $200M in the US. If people want to see a movie they will, no matter how big the competition is.
Doubtful. This film shows the effect she has on moviegoers (very little), so studios may not be as eager to send her scripts, especially not starring roles.
This doesn't mean her film career is over. Maybe she could prove herself in a small indie film like Mariah or maybe Tyler Perry can cast her in Madea Gets a Pap Smear or something. Not every pop star was made to be a movie star.

But then why did they have money to watch Avengers again?
Good luck with 2hrs blowing thing off in a lamer Michael Bay's way.
Actually, Battleship is an entertaining movie and I won't change my opinion about that know that it... Didn't match people's expectations. It wasn't supposed to be different from Transformers, thus the "From the producers of Transformers" in the trailer. They were targeting the audience of Transformers. Comparing it with Transformers though, it's pretty much the same, but shorter and with (even) dumber storyline. But obviously, Transformers had hype backed up by its fanbase and people who previously watched the movie, and Battleship had pretty much nothing.

This is not as much of a factor if interest is strong enough (there are consecutive weekends with hug openings all the time), and certainly not enough to account for only a ~$25m opening for a big-budget action flick like this.
Marketing for the movie was really bad. Strangely enough, the American release shouldn't have been closer, but farther from the international release. Nobody knows about the movie. What they need to do now is promote the **** out of it and hope to God it still has a chance to make more money.
Overall it did a good job internationally, but in the US... I was scared that it'd be a domestic bomb.

Just because Battleship flopped in the US doesn't mean anything... She still hasn't established herself in the movie industry and it's going to take more than one film to do so. I remember reading a year ago an article about how Battleship would do, and that they mentioned that the movie had almost no starpower other than Liam Neeson who had a small role and Rihanna who is a Pop star who isn't even an established movie star (yet).
Just because Battleship flopped in the US doesn't mean anything..
For Rihanna's career? Yes, it doesn't mean anything. Just like its big openings overseas a few weeks ago (but mediocre total so far) had absolutely nothing to do with her either. But y'all were singing a different tune then.
WTEWYE is a major disappointment too. Big ensemble cast, very commercial premise, based on a household-name book, critic-proof genre. They ****ed up what could have been a $30M+-opening female event movie. But because it only cost in the 30 millions, the headlines will all go to Battleship.

They didnt **** up anything. Avengers is overshadowing everything.
I think whats worse is WTEWYE. That movie had a HUGE ****ing cast, huge appeal, and is making less first weekend than Back-up Plan?!?!
I think everything is being overshadowed by Avengers.
many people thought Battleship would do 60 million and than the predictions came out for 47 million than that dropped to 30 million and now its 26 million. As far as I know WTEWYE was predicted to do more than 20 million and is now down to 12 million sure its bad but do you really think it can even be compared to Battleship?

I am aware of what other people were saying, but Rihanna did take a huge part in promoting the movie worldwide. It was like a mini-concert, she went from Japan to Australia doing interviews and whatever. Other than attending the premiere in the US, she pretty much did nothing to promote the movie. So you can't say that Rihanna had absolutely nothing to do with the film's success (overseas).
