Hello to all the contestants. 18 of you remain. Round 5 Results are here. Each team's scores will be posted along with the commentary. The next post will have the actual results and ranks of each team just like last round as well as your total averages throughout the game so far will be present.
Now on to results...
1. ethan - Dolly Parton - Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Quote:
Ray – 7 – I really appreciate your take on a classing song, and well, we all know how well-known Whitney made her version of the song, but I can feel completely satisfied with the entry simply because there’s little change on both ballads. You may agree one has a different arrangement (R&B) than the other one, but that’s about it.
Quote:
Anna - 5 - How do I say this.. It is out of the question that Whitney delivered an amazing rendition of this song, and it's probably even more famous than the original version. It really is a great cover. But in regards to what we were looking for this round, this is not the ideal fit but rather disappointing for several reasons. One, there is not much difference between the two versions, sure, Whitney's is more soul/R&B inspired and her voice is also different, but essentially, it's the same ballad only a different singer. When I listen to the song for fun, that is not the problem, but for this game we were hoping for entries that are a bit more risky, artistic, surprising. Two, this song has only been used last round. Yes, it was a different theme and all, but it strikes me as a little uncreative and taking the easy route by choosing a song that was basically right there in front of you and you didn't even have to look. I was simply expecting more from you, others took the risk of sending bold choices which is something I have repeatedly supported so I can't help but lower your score for the predictability and little diversity of this cover.
Quote:
Zaid - 9 - I hate you for bringing tears in my eyes. Great choice. I have nothing bad to say.
2. medosuxx - Kanye West - The Fray - Heartless
Quote:
Ray – 8.5 – I love this version. Of course nothing can top the original, but The Fray did an excellent job with this cover. Structurally there are almost no changes but I really felt the band made this song their own. Great job Medo!!
Quote:
Anna - 7 - A very difficult song to cover, since I think it lives off of the auto tune and Kanye's typical rapping/singing style. The Fray must have been aware of that because in the first half of the song, it seems like their singer is struggling with the vocals a bit and delivering them as fast as they should be. I love what they've done with the instrumentation, how they replaced the organ and kept the melody alive, however I feel like that's also only really on point when they start to get into the song. In the beginning they seem a bit lost.
Quote:
Zaid - 10 - I love when an artist takes a song and makes it a little more acoustic. The vocals really bring out the lyrics in the song. Great job!
3. DanceForYou - Nine Inch Nails - Johnny Cash - Hurt
Quote:
Ray – 10 – Nicole, if I was a player on this game, I swear I would’ve sent in this!! Best entry this round. Hurt by Johnny Cash is a country classic, and I can really feel the arrangement difference from the Nails’ version. On the Nails’ version, you can feel this chill and alternative vibe to the whole song, while Cash made this song his own by covering it with his trademark strong but raspy voice. I bow down.
Quote:
Anna - 10 - Wow. I just realized again that this is one of the best covers of all time, probably. I had never heard the original, and I was both surprised and astounded how the two versions are similar yet incredibly different at the same time. The NIN version is more quiet than I thought (bar that one guitar outbreak), it has a very eerie, creepy vibe, with the singer sounding very agitated, almost disturbed; and then you have the Johnny Cash version (which I used to think was the original btw), which is exactly the opposite - his voice is strong, sad but calm, so rich yet empty at the same time, and he seems to sing with the burden of his whole life he's lived weighing down on him, while he's facing death. It gives the song a whole new meaning, this difference between a young man and an old man performing it. Needless to say, Cash's cover was amazingly executed and I also love that you were brave enough to send this in.
Quote:
Zaid - 9 - Oh hey Nicole, welcome to #teamDylan. This is a solid choice. Both versions stand out on their own. Keep slaying!
4. AdamAL4 - Franz Schubert - Beyonce - Ave Maria
Quote:
Ray - 1 – I’m not sure this is exactly a cover, Beyonce’s version is basically a different song that samples the original one. I’m thinking you confused the objective of this challenge Adam
Quote:
Anna - 2 - This is not a cover, it's a rewrite. I listened to Schubert's version first, and I was already wondering how I was gonna compare it to Beyoncé's version because there is no original version with vocals. Then I listened to Beyoncé's performance and it's basically a different song, with different lyrics and different theme, and there is not much resemblance to the original that Schubert wrote. That's really all I can say to this, Beyoncé and her writers created a new song loosely based on the traditional Ave Maria and that is just not a cover
Quote:
Zaid - 8 - I was listening to Franz and I'm like where them lyrics at? So Beyoncé certainly took the song and made it her own. Good job Adam!
5. Stevie - Otis Redding - Aretha Franklin - Respect
Quote:
Ray - 8 – Great entry Stevie. To anyone who knows a bit of the history of music, you may know how big of an icon Otis Redding was, but Aretha murdered this song and made it her own. I love the fact that her cover adds this “Aretha” touch to it, the same touch that made this iconic song a female-empowerment songs ever.
Quote:
Anna - 8 - At first it didn't sound that different to me, but then I realized that the music is different and there are also some slight changes in the lyrics that have a big effect. Aretha has a different attitude and theme in her version and I really like that. With Otis, it's more of a happy, I'm-just-jamming-this-tune kind of song, whereas Aretha adds some fire to it and gives it that something special that made this song an anthem, not to forget the fact that she's a woman, and for a woman to declare such strength was something unusual back then.
Quote:
Zaid - 9 - LOVE this choice!! The arrangement is not very different, but the delivery in both is very distinctive. Like I felt Aretha took the song and made sure you give her that damn respect. Kudos
6. Killer Queen - Lady GaGa - 30 Seconds To Mars - Bad Romance
Quote:
Ray – 7 – KQ I appreciate you sending a live version of a cover. Gaga’s songs are usually tough to cover since she’s got this Gaga-seal and touch all over her own creations. I like the song and really think they made a great job overall, but I believe rock/alternative covers of a Pop song are way too common nowadays, specially with the whole Punk/Rock goes Pop series, I expect way more from you, this may be why I’m being this harsh. Still a good entry though.
Quote:
Anna - 6 - I was curious what this would sound like, and they really took an interesting approach in turning it into an experimental rock song. They did a good job with that, however, I feel like the cover is lacking some aspects of the original and sounds a bit too bland without the synth hook and GaGa's dramatic vocals. Jared's voice sometimes almost disappears and the whole song seems too static, there is no dynamic, it always stays at the same level. I think that kills the song a bit, although I have to say that this more toned down, almost sensual performance is not a bad thing per se.
Quote:
Zaid - 8 - This is another solid choice. I love how haunting and dark they made the song sound. Keep it up!
1. potentbreakupsong - Roxette - DHT feat. Edmée- Listen to Your Heart (Techno Version)
Quote:
Dylan - 8 - This like Scene's entry where I feel like they did make the sound very different, only in this case, it may have taken a little bit from the original version. I like it as an entry and also, I love the stripped down bersion DHT did. Obviously that would have flopped if you sent it though.
Quote:
Anna - 6 - I'm not a big fan of this. It's an okay cover, but I feel like they took away a lot from the song's depth and emotions by turning it into an EDM song. It's a bit soulless, and the way they used the beats and synths is not very original either. I was hoping for something more edgy from you, this seems rather generic.
Quote:
Zaid - 9 - I was obsessed with the Techno version when it came out!! This is probably my favorite choice by you thus far!
2. t.A.T.u. - Ednaswap - Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
Quote:
Dylan - 9.5 - Natalie's version is much better than the original in my opinion. Alos, it's much lighter and sweet to listen to compared to the roughness of the Ednasnap version.. I really like this choice t.A.T.u.
Quote:
Anna - 10 - That was my first time hearing the original, I definitely didn't expect it to be so grunge-y and garage-y! Really cool, especially with the guitar outro. In contrast to that, there's the light, pop-ish version of Natalie, with the acoustic guitar and her warm voice carrying the great melody. I love the emotion you get to hear, she really feels the song, and I also like how it sounds more structured than the original. Both versions have their own charm, but Natalie made this song her own without taking anything away from it. Bravo.
Quote:
Zaid - 6 - I hate giving out low scores but I feel this entry is lacking. It didn't really meet the challenge's expectations for me. This cover doesn't really stand out much against the covers' some of the other players submitted.
3. MWB - Kim Carnes - Taylor Swift - Bette Davis Eyes
Quote:
Dylan - 5.5 - I feel like it can be compared to the Kim version easily. If you saw Scene or VJoker's entry, that's what we were going for. Something that changes the song into their own. This is a clear cover.
Quote:
Anna - 7 - It's not bad, even though I think Taylor can't quite compare to Kim's version. The acoustic performance is nice and sweet, and Taylor brings her own charm to it, but I kinda miss the rasp of Kim's voice and the oomph behind it. It's just a bit basic. As a live version, it's a really great thing to do from Taylor, though, and it's nice to see her do that kind of songs.
Quote:
Zaid - 7 - Decent entry, again it doesn't really stand out against some of the other entries. But I like Taylor's vocals on the song, it was a nice touch.
4. Middle of Selena - Frankie Valli - Lauryn Hill - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Quote:
Dylan - 8 - I actually think this is a great entry, but as we both know, there wasn't much inspiration from you that came into this entry. You know what I'm talking about. Play for yourself next round please.
Quote:
Anna - 9 - I'm impressed by this, it's an absolute classic but Lauryn Hill managed to make it her own without alienating the original sound too much. It's laid back and modern, yet you can still hear the sincerity in the vocals that are there in the original as well. It's so cool how she does the singing/rapping in the verses, it's probably not something you would expect to go down well with this kind of song but she rocks it. I'm just curious how you found this song, because it doesn't seem like something you usually listen to..
Quote:
Zaid - 10 - FLAWLESS!! I have never heard the Lauryn version before, but the original is one of my fav of all time. Ms. Hill took the song and made it her OWN! Like damn, I'm stunned by how good this hip-hop/soul flavored cover is. Best entry from you yet.
5. MusicLoverDude - Bryan Adams - DJ Sammy - Heaven
Quote:
Dylan - 7 - This is probably my least favorite of the dance songs sent in this round. Compared to the others, it just falls flat. Just because something fits doesn't make it the best entry. Also, it's much worse than the original.
Quote:
Anna - 7 - I don't know why y'all thought it would be such a great idea to send in dance songs. Yeah, it's a big change transforming a soft rock ballad into a dance tune, but it's not exactly a big artistic achievement. At least this song is a bit different, it's a decent singer so the vocals are good, and the production is also nice and not as repetitive as other songs. I like the little acoustic guitar break in there as well, the song has a lighter sound than usual EDM songs which is very enjoyable. Overall, a cover that could have turned out much worse.
Quote:
Zaid - 8 - Yet another techno remix this round, not really my favorite. But again it works so keep up your good work!
1. Monk - Roberta Flack - The Fugees - Killing Me Softly
Quote:
Dylan - 9.5 - The original is more of a loght R&B and the cover has that Hip-Hop feel to it. You understood the theme of this round and it shows. Nothing more to say than great choice.
Quote:
Ray – 9.5 – Yasssss Monk!!! Prove everyone you keep reppin’ Team Ray with this flawless entry. I love the Fugees version because they turned an already Soul classic and made it their own with a hip-hop twist. Lyrics basically stay the same and you can still feel the Lauryn Hill vibe over those Roberta Flack lyrics. Flawless entry, one of the best this round.
Quote:
Zaid - 8 - Solid entry Monk! I love how there is a transition from the smooth original to the hip-hop version cover. I liked it!
2. DripDrip - La Roux - Melody Thornton & Bobby Newberry - Bulletproof
Quote:
Dylan - 10 - For me, this is the best entry this round. It's complete;y different. There's no comparing thwe two versions. One is an electropop jam and the other is this slow pop ballad type song. Very good Drip!
Quote:
Ray – 10 – As much as I hate you right now, you made a flawless job this round. You completely gathered a soft pop ballad, and Elly & La Roux turned this into an electropop masterpiece. A complete rework of the original, that keeps the original lyrics, but manages to feel like a different song. I’m still mad at you but you made an amazing choice, congrats!!
Quote:
Zaid - 10 - WaiiitT MELODY was serving them vocals!! I have never heard this cover before and it is STUNNING and **** all over the crappy overrated original song. Your best entry, amazing work!!
3. TheSeenScene - Rescal Flatts - Cascada - What Hurts The Most
Quote:
Dylan - 9.5 - Like I said in my rate for VJoker, I feel like you did the better job of completely reversing the genre. which gave you the edge over VJoker. But I feel like Valerie is much better quality which brought you two to about the same level. Both of you did great so it's sad seeing one of you go.
Quote:
Ray - 10 - This is one of the best entries of the whole round. The obvious electronic remake over a country classic makes this a flawless entry. Nice fight to stay in Seen!!
Quote:
Zaid - 8.5 - This is a great choice as well, with two versions being completely different from each other. Keep up the great work if you stay!
4. collin - Electric Light Orchestra - Lily Allen - Mr. Blue Sky
Quote:
Dylan - 6.5 - It's cute. Nothing I'm going to rave about. She kind of makes everything her own with that voice of hers. I think there were much better choices overall.
Quote:
Ray – 8 – I’ve never heard the ELO version before, so I was actually shocked to know this wasn’t a Lily Allen original. Lily makes everything her own with that soothing voice she carries, so I’m glad you sent this. You see Collin, I know you can send in good scores
Quote:
Zaid - 7 - Not a bad choice. I personally feel it's lacking against the rest. But Ms. Allen does put her spin on it. Gotta bring it harder next time!
1. Lippy - Snow Patrol - Leona Lewis - Run
Quote:
Dylan - 7.5 - Bottom line, there's not much to do with this song. Only thing I will give you is it does sound like a Leona Lewis original until you listen to the Snow Patrol version.
Quote:
Ray – 9 - This is basically a ballad sung by a woman, turned from Alternative Rock to Pop. However, you did hit my weak spot, Run is my favorite song from Leona, and I love how her vocals turned this into a masterpiece.
Quote:
Anna - 7 - This is very difficult to compare, the song is a ballad so there is not a lot you can do to it in terms of interpretation. The original was a rock ballad though, and Leona turned it into full on pop, with those strings, the choir and her soulful vocals of course. The way she performs this, it's obvious that she really understands the song and to be honest, I didn't know it was a cover for the longest time because it sounds so much like one of her songs.
2. Kavish - Nickelback - Avril Lavigne - How You Remind Me
Quote:
Dylan - 9.5 - Avril really made this not necessarily into her own, but into a completely different mood. This is too well known of a song for anyone to think it's Avril's, but she sure did change it up.
Quote:
Ray – 8 – Kavish you definitely got what the challenge was looking for. I really appreciate how this version of the song feels completely different from the original one, without actually changing its lyrics. Nice job!!
Quote:
Anna - 10 - I've always enjoyed this cover, I love how she completely changed the mood and vibe of the song to something much more calm, melancholy even. Her voice sounds very fragile and soft, as opposed to Chad's raspy belting in the original, and the underlying tone of sadness really suits the song. I hope they sing it together some time, that would be great to hear.
3. theoyella jukebox - Mary Reilly - Cascada - Everytime We Touch
Quote:
Dylan - 3 - This is not a cover. It only borrows the chorus. That's sampling, not covering. I was expecting to be giving this a high score ut it unfortunately, misses the theme.
Quote:
Ray – 2 - I love the whole rearrangement of the song, but yeah, Cascada basically rewrote the first four verses of the song. I’m sorry about that because I really wanted to give this a high score since Everytime We Touch is one of my favorite songs from the decade, but it’s a miss on this challenge.
Quote:
Anna - 4 - I'm sorry, but for me this is not a cover. Cascada wrote their own verses and only kept the chorus and melody, so it is a different song and that's why it also sounds like a typical Cascada song. I can't really judge this under these circumstances, but even though the song was successful and is a great dance track, I personally don't like what they've done to the original because I don't think it's suitable for EDM
All your scores have been revealed. Now you will find your name ranked among your team by your individual average. However, team averages decide who is in jeopardy. However, the top scorer from each team is immune if their team goes to Tribal (the name of that contestant will be bold). The bottom two average scoring teams will be in jeopardy. The 2nd highest averaging team will be safe. The highest averaging team's judge will choose between the bottom two to decide who goes to Tribal Council where they will vote one member of their team off the Island.
In addition, you will now see how far you fell or rose on both leader boards indicated by + or - followed by a number.
However, this time it will show your rise or fall from the previous round where you were on a different team possibly.
The team who will be deciding which team goes to Tribal Council is...
Average: 8.9
2nd Place & safe...
Average: 7.8
Which means the Two Teams in Jeopardy are...
Average: 7.4
&
Average: 6.7
I will get back to you with Anna's decision as soon as she decides. Once that decision is made, I will make an announcement and we will go into our 5th Tribal Council where one of you will leave the Island. Congratulations to the two safe teams (Anna & Ray)
I'm sure we're going to Tribal but tbh my team is standouts from each season. each one of them ranked top 10 on our rate. think about that. eventually it's every player for themselves.
Yay, Genuinely Happy with my Scores and being in Second Place
Congrats DanceForYou, amazing song choice

Congrats DanceForYou, you slayed hard for our team.
Thanks guys! You both did great as well. I'm so happy with my score so thanks to the judges too! I was honestly a bit worried about my choice at first but I'm glad the risk paid off. It's such a beautiful song.
I hope our team can stay intact through the round! Have faith Dylan. Lol

Isn't that even more reason to put us in the bottom I'm kinda confused by your logic zune realness
