I still believe that BoA could have if she did more than the Gay Pride US Tour, and had some TV appearances and if her movie wasn't you know postponed/cancelled in the US and she had the OST.

Pretty much. Asian-Pop admiration as a whole remains a niche market in the US, and when I say niche I mean 20,000 people out of 320 million.

No K-pop star would be taken serious internationally, unless they reformed to that culture and made English music. Even then, I'm not sure any would ever hit "pop girl" status.

I doubt it. Not even Rain could and he won a MTV movie award + made TIME's list.
BoA's album was flawless . She should have just pulled a Namie and only do English stuff in Japan.

The rest of the album was horrific though. Cheap, unworthy, In The Zone filler.

It's funny that you make the Brit comparison because if she'd kept working the whole "Asian Britney" thing and went more with that kind of sound I feel like she probably could've had some minor success eventually.
I liked her album though, just her accent while actually speaking English needed a loooot of work.

Looking at all the big name artists in Korea, I honestly believe CL has the best chance to have a moderately successful career in the states. She's fluent in english, has an amazing stage presence, and has several connections already made in the industry. The only thing that could mess it up is YG not knowing how to promote her here.
HyunA could also have a career here, but she'd have to learn english and completely abandon her pikachu voice she uses in some songs.

I remember watching an interview with Tiffany and she said she'd like to go back to the states and do stuff there on her own at some point in the future. I guess if any K-pop idol was to make it big internationally, a native would have more of a chance. Less of an accent barrier.

It was as you said, Asian Britney except without the sex and without the sex, what would Britney have been selling; nothing. That in itself was one of many flaws with BoA's US effort.
Anything with Sean Garrett involved is generally a no in my books. Thank goodness SNSD's discography was reaching for new depths of depravity with songs by him laced through it.

Wait maybe I take back what I said. I can see CL having decent success, I didn't know how good her English was. Interesting. She'd need to be promoted well though.
Sooyoung, didn't you post something about SNSD having an Interscope deal around the time of The Boys? A T-Ara N4 kind of sub-unit could actually work for them. Sooyoung and Yuri are good English speakers, them two, Jessica and Tiffany could have Little Mix-esque success.

CL is lacking the crucial personality which would make her likeable though. She is not only quite introverted but, more importantly, the language barrier further decreases her chances of resonating with the public as any wit or comedic ability translating from Korean to English. Even Rihanna, despite her first encounter with written English being reading 'mens' on a record label door, is sharp even with that accent.
Yep. Universal Music noticed SNSD following their meteoric rise to fame in Japan, Baby One More Time style. They then proceeding in contacting SM during the summer of 2011 and SNSD were signed to Interscope under Insterscope/SM USA. The Boys had already been recorded during that summer, prior to signing, so, as requested by Interscope, an English version was made, just to get the ball rolling per say. It was released to provide a cheap way of seeing what size of fanbase they already had. The promotion that followed in Jan/Feb 2012 was to obtain public perception on them almost entirely for use by Interscope's marketing team prior to the release of the lead single of their debut album, pencilled in for a release around May 2012. The fact that The Boys was never sent to radio is testament to the fact that Interscope alludes to the aforementioned plan by Interscope.
And yes, I have mentioned that idea before. A Sooyoung, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Tiffany/Jessica subunit geared towards the US would have just as much success as 2NE1 with the advantage that they are far more extroverted and needless to say, actually attractive looking.

CL wouldn't make it in America. I feel like her personality doesn't suit the American market at all. Plus she's so awkward in English interviews.
SNSD couldn't make it with 9 girls either. It would have to be a sub-unit and Tiffany and Jessica would have to be in it. Yoona, Yuri, Sunny and Taeyeon can forget it as their English isn't good enough. They would have to have radical English lessons before considering anything in America. Seohyun probably wouldn't fit in the subunit, Hyoyeon could work in the subunit only because of her looks and US popularity, again her English would need a huge overhaul, Sooyoung could work, but she would need to change her current image.
Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, Tiffany and Jessica could work as a band in the US. Tiffany and Jessica would be the main vocals, Hyoyeon could be the main dancer and main rapper along with Sooyoung as a rapper and backing vocals.
But I agree only native English speakers could make it in the US from the K-Pop world. Tiffany and Jessica have the most western looks and style in SNSD and in the K-Pop industry in general imo. They don't have any "foreignness" about them when they speak English, which can be a barrier. BoA suffered a lot from that during her American effort, and even SNSD got loads of racist comments when they won the YouTube award.
Either way I don't think SM or YG care that much for the US market. Previously they had no reason to go over there, especially with so many K-Pop acts having success in Japan which is a big market. But now that Japan is over K-Pop, I think they will aim for China instead of the US as the next market to go for. There are more barriers in the US than there are in China. I think we could see an SNSD Chinese album in the future because of this.
