Tree - What a deep title! Messing aside, I do think that the song might be slightly on the unfocused side. I'm not sure the first part of the chorus works here, the painting lyric feels random considering most of the song is about filling in a family tree and you would think someone asking another to help fill in their family tree would already know quite a bit about the other person (including favorite color). A couple rhymes feel a little too easy (the "start" rhyme in the pre-chorus and "greet" in verse 2), but overall, I did like the structure of the lyrics and the idea of asking a person to help fill a family tree.

MESS it is not about asking somebody to help fill a family tree, it's about wanting to start a family with somebody
The verses are supposed to detail that it is a love at first sight situation, which is why they don't know the other person's favourite colour and want them to "tell me all about you". It isn't supposed to be entirely literal (although it could be) the family tree imagery is mostly supposed to show the extent to which the person is falling in love. I mean obviously two people who meet for the first time don't want to start having kids but it's supposed to show that the person is very seriously falling in love. The painting lyric is supposed to show that the writer wants to fill his loves world with their favourite colour - metaphorically creating the most beautiful world possible for them. It's not literal

of course it could be, in the sense that they could buy a home together to build a family, and the painting thing would come into hand. That's the charm I try to show - something very ordinary such as painting can have incredible sentiment behind it. It makes sense literally and metaphorically. Sadly I guess you only took it literally.
