Janet Jackson's janet. sold 350,000 in its first week, in May of 1993. It held the record for the highest first-week sales by a female artist for five years. I'm always trying to figure out who held the record first. Erotica sold 167,000 in October 1992. I've yet to find a female album during the Soundscan Era that sold more than that prior to Janet's record. Does anyone have any information?

I've tried to look this up on Wikipedia but couldn't find a figure on some of the albums I thought would be popular (like Whitney or Madonna) . I think it was just really common for albums to debut with really low numbers pre-Soundscan. You should thread it. I know Billboard was compiled by a really weird points system prior to 1991, and I'm sure certain albums, like True Blue or Rhythm Nation, had first-week sales that aren't reflected by debuting in 30th place on the Billboard 200. I wish I could get some kind of sense of how many copies these albums sold in the opening weeks. I'm always curious about how Bad sold in its opening week. Dangerous sold 327,000 out of the gate so I'm sure it wasn't higher than like 400,000. #chartgeek

It would be great to know. I'm sure the sales of a lot of artists are higher than is claimed but they really kept books pretty badly around that time imo .
