Nirvanas legacy excluding their lasting musical influence is that they opened the doors for alternative music into mainstream, they define not just grunge, but the whole Generation X. They shook the whole music industry and created a revolution in which they single handedly killed the macho posturing hard rock and hair metal and introduced alternative to the mainstream. After Nirvana, rock music, but also pop music which thanks to them started to embrace elements of alternative, was never the same.
So yeah, Nirvana is THE defining artist of the 90s. And if it wouldnt be them, then it would be Radiohead or 2Pac, not Mariah lol
