Biggest = most influential? I could NEVER deny that, because it's true. She is the biggest artist of 2007/2008 (although hopefully Britney will pwn late 2008/2009).

Oh wait the last 2 are influential to fat women.

Are you angered? I actually find Brandy and Janet to be moreso though. It's hard not to find a new R&B/Pop artist who cites Brandy as an influence, and Janet influenced everyone including Brandy. The only person who I've ever heard say Christina influenced them is Melody from PCD.

She's still got a lot of people's attention and a strong fanbase but her music isn't blazing trails for anybody, I mean, I really don't see any artists out right now that you could legitimately label a "Britney wannabe."
|
Oh, thank you Bobby, lord of articulation. You said exactly what I wanted to say.

And please don't say Rihanna. Rihanna isn't exactly in a league of her own but she's not following in Britney's footsteps either.

This I also agree with. Most people here don't really know what "influential" means.

They are related if you think about it. There is a reason why she is the biggest female artist right now.
Alexz comments are getting more pathetic by the minute.

Lady Gaga influenced Christina Aguilera this year. She should be Top 8.

And please don't say Rihanna. Rihanna isn't exactly in a league of her own but she's not following in Britney's footsteps either. Neither is Katy, and if anything, Christina is riding Gaga's coattails. I think Disney wants to make Miley the next generation's Britney but she's not of the same caliber. So basically, Britney is Britney but let's face it, her heyday has passed. You don't see anybody emulating her fashion sense or music videos anymore. I'm not trying to dismiss her at all, but come on, even Rico conceded that Britney hasn't been an influential artist this year. Nobody is denying her relevance, but her influence is negligible. I have a feeling though that 2009 might regain some of her status.

Obviously, I'm not talking about Britney MUSICALLY, since she didn't even release music throughout the year, but we need to re-phrase the word influential. Influence = power. And that's where I see Britney at and where I CLEARLY stated her being influential. And if you wanna go musically, neither of the names mentioned in this thread had their own sound or having artists following their footsteps in 2008. Success is part of influence but there's a difference between being successful and being influential. Sadly, 95% of people in this thread can't tell the difference.

Is it true that Best Of Hilary Duff will peak higher than Keeps Gettin' Better - A Decade Of Hits on Billboard?

Agreed that she has been influential to Aguilera, but I based it on artist's success and relevance. 'Just Dance' is just becoming well recognized by top 40, so there's always '09 for her!

Good for Duff if she can pull that off, although that's incredibly embarrassing for Christina if that does actually happen considering the fan base that she had at one point!

Good response. I think you and I are both right, we just had two different connotations of the word "influence" in mind. Britney's status and legacy are something that still hold a great deal of clout in both the media and the music industry, but her music itself hasn't defined this current era. 1999-2003 in the pop arena rightfully belong to her though.

Ok, to set the record about WHAT IS MEANT BY INFLUENTIAL....
Basically, the reasons that I gave regarding each artist in the beginning reflect why they are influential. I mentioned that they are based on RELEVANCE in the music industry as well as THEIR SUCCESS in the music industry. Whether relevance or their success weighs heavier doesn't really matter, but the artists I mentioned fit into either of those categories.
I hope this cleared it up somewhat....although I'm sure it didn't for some, cause some people were just born with the fail syndrome.

Oh, and just for example.... the reason Britney Spears was put on here....
It's granted that Blackout is from '07, however, 'Break the Ice' made quite an influence on top 40 radio in the spring.... also, she is constantly talked about across the tabloids, obviously people are interested in her.... and now more than ever before, her music is in the news.... when her new record leaked today, many on here were freaking out.... that shows you how much of an impact she's had on people and music this year.... also the top producers still want to work with her, which is a testament to her continued success.
ok, if that hasn't convinced you, i don't know what will.... i'm done.
