I will be counting down my top 20 albums released in the year 2012.

Gossip
Gossip go pop. I was quite surprised when I first heard they were going in this direction, although I guess it was inevitable after Beth's solo EP (which is amazing by the way). This album shows that the band aren't afraid of experimenting and appearing to have "sold out". Anyway, it's an excellent pop album.

Feeder
After the slight disappointment that was Renegades, Feeder are back better than ever with this release. The lead single is one of the catchiest songs I've heard this decade and the album contains similarly great songs. It does decrease in quality during the second half but Feeder are forgiven as the first half is so amazing.

"Borders" - 10
"Idaho" - 9
"Hey Johnny" - 9
"Quiet" - 8.8
"Sunrise" - 8.5

Garbage
The album that made me a big fan of Garbage. Perhaps because it's their best, overall. Version 2.0 and Garbage may have some bigger highs for the most part but this album is their most consistent overall. There's just something about Shirley's voice that gets me every time. An incredibly strong comeback.
Track Scores
"Automatic Systematic Habit" - 9

"Blood for Poppies" - 9.3

Noisettes
Like Gossip, Noisettes have gone pop. Unlike Gossip, they kinda already were pop. The Noisettes know how to craft a great song and they've made an album full of them! The album is sort of a mish-mash of genres; pop, country, R&B, a bit of reggae and folk, all tied together by catchy hooks and Shingai's great vocals. One of the highlights is Travelling Light, which appears to be an ordinary cute ballad, before it erupts into an dizzying electronic instrumental towards the end.
Track Scores
"I Want You Back" - 8
"Final Call" - 7.8
"Winner" - 9.5
"Let the Music Play" - 9.3
"Travelling Light" - 10
"That Girl" - 10
"Ragtop Car" - 8.8
"Never Enough" - 10
"Love Power" - 8
"Free" - 8.5
"Star" - 7.6
"Contact" - 8.6 |
