I'm glad these ratings were awful. I was actually fooled into thinking this was going to be an iconic VMAs. Britney Spears was performing after nearly ten years. Beyoncé was performing "Lemonade." Kanye West was going to babble on for four minutes about Taylor Swift like a senile old man. I was expecting some entertainment, some iconic moments—but nope.
Aside from Beyoncé and Britney Spears, all the performances were forgettable trash. I don't know what MTV was thinking with those obnoxious hosts. And the entire night was just a compete catastrophe and waste of talents. The MTV VMAs have become trash, and not trash in a good way, like the BET Awards. MTV is not cool. MTV will never be cool again. Next year will probably be a Taylor-Swift-Katy-Perry-Lady-Gaga showdown at the VMAs, but not even that can get me to tune into another VMAs; the show is just not relevant anymore. Hopefully Britney Spears never shows up to another VMAs, either, since the MTV producers obviously tried to sabotage her for ratings (again), ratings they didn't even get because their show was so awful.
Everyone needs to boycott the VMAs next year, for your own self-respect. Just stick with the American Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards—at least both of those shows are relevant, have a good atmosphere, not desperately trying too hard to be cool and controversial, and are actually entertaining to watch.

Whew.
Slurp slurp, don't burp.
I have a feeling both the ratings and streaming will go up again and the monsters will deservingly boast.
I mean we had 3 heavyweights this year and all signs are pointing to No gaga no ratings so...
literally NOBODY watches TV anymore, most people check the performances in facebook or youtube. Or they stream. Next year the ratings gonna be 3million.
This exactly. With technology and it's advances you no longer have to sit in front of your TV to watch something played out. You can choose when you want to view. I personally can't remember the last time I watched anything live that wasn't playing in the break room of my job or in a retail environment. Even my favorite shows game of thrones or the walking dead, I view at a more convenient time for me as opposed to waiting until they are actually broadcast.
Doesn't matter who is or isn't there, award shows are becoming a thing of the past. It just feels antiquated tbh.
It's true, award shows used to be these rarefied events where you saw these celebrities all together in one setting so it was an event. With social media were exposed to them constantly so it's not as big a deal to see them perform. I can go on YouTube and see every one of these acts perform the same song 15 times so I'm not missing anything by not watching the vmas.
People dont watch TV like that anymore thats such an antiquated thing to do especially for a music award show. The buzz and revenue MTV experienced for this VMAs>>>
