The majority of fans on this forum were already loving it in the album thread before any review came in. In fact most people expected a drop in acclaim since she took a more accesible approach and everyone was fine with it. People are merely congratulating her on this impressive achievment. Whether you value the opinion of critics or you don't, or whether she is underground or not does not matter at all. It's about a talented woman getting the recognition she deserves for her talent and hard work.

Its pretty amazing that the whole record was produced, engineered, written, performed by one woman, although she did say she outsourced her mixing to spike stent - but mixing is probably something she'll get better at in time.

Yes, and the album itself is very good and *fun* to listen to. Her subjects are not light ones, but she somehow manages to make it a pleasing experience.

From what I remember Kate Bush wrote, recorded and mixed/produced Hounds Of Love completely by herself as well as directing some of the music videos for it (and being involved in the creation of all of them). That was huge and had massive acclaim, so I wouldn't say Grimes is the first and there are other women who have done this. Joni Mitchell and Bjork also come to mind. I know Bjork has had a few collaborators on all of her albums but she was recently talking about people assuming certain male producers were responsible for her genius when really they just made little additions to the mix or something.

Anyway, non of this takes away from Grimes, she did really well with this album. Honestly, I expected it to be a let down because that can happen when an artist becomes a lot more successful.

I can't seem to find a lie.

Not to mention that Taylor wrote a better album; the only reason Grimes' album is more acclaimed is because she isn't as popular, so she doesn't get unnecessary flak for her image, publicity, or general presence in the mainstream realm. Being indie helps a lot when it comes to critics' opinions. Sensible publications like Rolling Stone did rate Speak Now higher than Art Angels, anyway.
