Unlike basically every other category, it's an element that often seems like it's done for the sole purpose of getting an Oscar. Like, it's definitely not expected that that many movies have an original song...while, say, every movie needs a director, actors, writing, costumes, a set, etc. Many of the nominees don't even play during the movie but during the end credits because they have so little to do with the movie and barely count.
The Grammy category existing should be enough.
Maybe back in the olden days it made sense when musicals were being pumped out left and right, but these days the nominees are irrelevant and/or not even tied in with the movies much.
"Let It Go" was the defining moment of its film, as the Disney songs typically are. They're kinda the exception to the rule, though. I do think that original songs are generally a lot less important nowadays than they used to be.
People claimed this about the Satellite Awards when I said they were dumb, and I pointed out that some of my fave actresses happened to win there which means nothing.
People on this site can give 'awards' or w/e to my faves; their agreeing with me doesn't mean that they have any legitimacy or relevance.
And anyway, Taylor's masterpiece Safe and Sound was totally not an integral or even important part of The Hunger Games. So it would be awkward if it won an Oscar.
How integral are Original Songs to the movies you watched last year, huh?
I bet a bunch of you crazed stans probably will never even watch the movie, and couldn't even judge it as an element of the movie. I mean, it made $400k...
That's like calling the makeup & hairstyling categories irrelevant cause not all movies require an elaborate makeup/hair-styling, same with the custome design and many other categories

You are just pressed, just accept it and move on.
But basically ALL MOVIES HAVE makeup, and costumes, and the rest of the categories (except maybe visual effects, but those that use it use it a ton to the extent that it is in fact essential to the movies).
Some have more, but it's not the same thing at all.
There aren't tons of movies out there that sorta but not really have an original song. This is a ridiculous comparison that belittles their craft.
The fact that a ton of people feel like they can completely judge the category outside of the movies themselves shows how separate from the movies they are.

I believe literally the only original musicals this century to make at least $40 mil are all Disney and/or cartoons.
How integral are Original Songs to the movies you watched last year, huh? Basically the only great examples I can think of this century are original musicals, mostly Disney Princess movies.

Lose Yourself comes to mind. But yeah, that Gaga song is absolutely dreadful.

It's literally the exact same thing with the Original Song, you just don't see it cause you're pressed.
I mean, the Original song category lost all validity when 'Its Hard Out Here For A Pimp' won back in 2006, haha (nonetheless, still better than that trash Gaga is nominated for). Since then, it just seems like they're just giving that Oscar out like unsold ARTPOP concert tickets sold on Groupon.

LOLOL.
You're saying that literally all movies have Original Songs. Okay, good to know. I never knew that about every movie I've ever watched. In fact, I thought all my life that most of them did not have Original Songs, but you have shown me the light.

BTW, Till The Oscar Nomination Happens To You has been a key part of the documentary & it's success.

Not a pressed Madead fan saying this when your decrepit fave has been campaigning for years to get a nomination (& failed).
She even does a Oscars party every year, like WTF.

It made $400k. What success?
No, I'm saying that not all movies need to have an Original Song (which Gaga & Diane got a nomination, hihi, I know it hurts) just like they don't need to have special effects & just like not every single movie can compete in every single category.
You are extremely pressed btw, you're definitely not a Taylor fan (they are never this pressed cause their fave is always winning), I bet you're a secret Deadney stan or something.
