Lana Del Rey
Young and Beautiful
The Great Gatsby (Music From Baz Luhrmann's Film)
This song is the perfect song for TGG. The intro piano is haunting. The pre-chorus is absolutely euphoric, and the chorus is packed with emotion. This is Lana in her best form, and served as the perfect song for her to start gaining popularity here in the US. |
|
Beyoncé
XO
BEYONCÉ
The first time I listened to the album, this song was so immediate. It's literally a slice of Pop perfection. Beyonce sounds heartfelt and powerful, and the chorus chanting in the chorus is absolutely brilliant. The clip of the Challenger wasn't needed at the beginning though, but it doesn't bother me. |
|
Katy Perry
This Moment
PRISM
I love the retro beat this song has. It's a cute, heartwarming, and inspiring song. She sings with such passion all throughout the song, The lyrics are a bit on the cliche side, but she sings with such emotion, they don't even matter. |
|
Paramore
Still Into You
Paramore
I knew this would be a big hit for them the first time I heard this. Hayley's vocals are reminiscent of Gwen Stefani in No Doubt. The instrumental is bliss, and while it may be very Pop compared to the rest of their catalogue, it still fits in perfectly with who they are. |
|
Katy Perry
This Is How We Do
PRISM
I know everyone will hate me for this, but trust me, I'm right there with you. I used to think this was the worst song on PRISM, but one day, I just listened to it and it clicked. It's a fun pop song that doesn't take itself serious. The lyrics are very clever as well. |
|
Mariah Carey
#Beautiful (feat. Miguel)
The Art of Letting Go
I never would've thought I could like a Mariah song so much. It's literally the most simple and breezy Pop song released in 2013. Their voices blend flawlessly, and it's such a #beautiful Summer song. I pray that there's more songs like this on TAOLG. |
|
OneRepublic
If I Lose Myself
Native
Although CS is the big hit off Native, I find myself loving this song way more. This sees 1R experimenting with Dance music, something they've never done before. It's a moody, emotional, and the production is hypnotic. It's flawless lyrics also help. |
|
Katy Perry
Spiritual
PRISM
This song doesn't even sound like it should be on Prism, it's Alternative-Pop compared to the rest. It's lyrics are astounding (which were co-written with John Mayer). The chorus isn't that strong, but the verses make up for it. |
|
Katy Perry
Ghost
PRISM
Love the 80's throwback this song has. The lyrics are very realistic and the fact this song calls out Russel Brand is amazing. This song also signifies the start of the second half of Prism, which maybe better than the first. |
|
Bonnie McKee
American Girl
TBA
Summer ANTHEM. I always knew Bonnie was a genius when it came to good hooks, but damn. This song is literal ear candy. I wish this song performed way better than it did, but I think this electro-pop trend is over. I can't wait to see what she brings this year. |
|
Beyoncé
BEYONCÉ
Top 5: Pretty Hurts, Haunted, Drunk In Love, Blow, XO
Only Beyoncé could release an album with prior warning, with two weeks left in the year, and completely outsell everyone. But it's deservedly so, because this is, by far, her best album. She's finally displaying her artistic side, making music to just make music. The visual album concept is genius, and helped me appreciate this album even more. There's barely any filler, and she sounds ***Flawless on every song. |
