The only really "incredible" part of the song is the chorus, so I don't think it deserved more than an 8.
Bingo. Which is why it's a 6. A chorus can only do so much.
And True Blue's only great part is its bridge. So, it is deservedly the first Madonna single to go,
My predicted top ten:
1. Papa Don't Preach
2. What Have You Done For Me Lately?
3. La Isla Bonita
4. Open Your Heart
5. Let's Wait Awhile
6. When I Think of You
7. Live to Tell
8. Control
9. The Pleasure Principle
10. True Colors
My ideal top ten
1. Open Your Heart
2. The Pleasure Principle
3. When I Think of You
4. What Have You Done for Me Lately?
5. Papa Don't Preach
6. Let's Wait Awhile
7. Control
8. Live to Tell
9. True Colors
10. La Isla Bonita
Oh, I DEFINITELY think "Pleasure Principle" will be higher than "WHYDFML" and "Control." It's so gay(ATRL)tastic. Now, the other two Janet songs are another issue.
I feel like I kind of overrated "White Heat" when I first listened to it for this rate (I gave it a 10...?), so I'm fine with it leaving at this point in the countdown.
"Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)" is definitely a grower. It's such a slow jam that it takes a while to get into, but I find it quite sexy. It's among my three or four favorites from Control.
I love "True Blue." It's just so...adorable. This is the kind of awesome retro doo-wop jam that Cyndi was trying to make on True Colors.
I'm surprised to see "Nasty" out before the top ten. I'm fine with it, since I don't actually love the song all that much, but it should have at least beat out "What Have You Done For Me Lately" (which is way overrated).
"Change of Heart" SLAYS. It's easily a 10; I don't know what Ace was thinking. Maybe that's why the rest of True Colors mostly feels like a letdown? Anyway, in a rate that was so harsh on Cyndi, it's kind of a victory for the song to even make it this far.
Out of this final list of songs, I'm hoping "Control," "Open Your Heart" or "Papa Don't Preach" takes it. I would probably round out the top five with "Let's Wait Awhile" and "True Colors."
Conversely, I don't fully get the appeal of "Live to Tell" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately." I think they're both good songs, but I personally wouldn't have them anywhere near the top ten.
hmm i guess Let's Wait A While will be in the top 5...and what will be the next 1 .. "Gold Rebel Album Rate" .....Rhythm Nation vs. Like A Prayer vs A Night To Remember (1989)
Okay, this song is cute (not as cute as "Boy Blue" though). This was a single only in the Netherlands. Why just the Netherlands, I'll never know. It shouldn't have been a single anywhere. I "get" the whole 50s vibe of this song, but I feel it never really takes off. I'm more a fan of tightly-structured songs, so the lack of an obvious structure in this song irritates me.
I may not say this is the second best on the album now, but I still like it a lot. Deserved to be a little higher. I gave it an 8.
Oh, this song. When I saw it in the tracklist, I hoped it would be really good. But it's not. In fact, it's the most "meh" song in the rate. People didn't feel anything about it either way. Notice, nobody loved it enough to give it a 10, and nobody hated it enough to give it a 4. Just mehness in the 6, 7, 8 range. This is the last song in the rate to not receive a 10.
P.S. - What's Going On with that single cover?
It takes a little time to grow, but when it did I gave it a 7.5. If it wasn't for my last listen, it would be lower...
Cyndi's almost out of here now with only two songs remaining after this one. This is the first of the four remaining non-singles to leave the competition. I wish I had given this song higher than a 6 now, because it's really strong. It was easily at least a 7 looking back on it
A few people are going to be really mad about this one Another non-single leaves the building, but I could have easily seen this being a bit hit for Madge. It wasn't one of my faves on True Blue, but I definitely see the appeal of it. I gave it a 7, and so did a plurality of the voters. Can't stand the crying baby at the end of the song.
Oh, I expected it to be very high, since everyone here seems to love that one.... It got an 8 from me. Fair enough, I guess.
Did Michael ghost-write on this one? It reminds me of him so much. This rate is clearly all about the singles, as there is only one non-single left now that this one is gone. This could have been another Top 10 (20?) single for Janet, though. Just LOL @ that last high note. Did Janet really hit that???
This one was kind of fun, as long as I remember... 6.5.
The last non-single goes out right before the half-way point. I don't really like the film samples in the song, but I guess it's a reference Madge wanted to use. The chorus is just so catchy, one of the catchiest in the rate. I really think this could have been a #1 single It's also the last song to have an average less than 8.
White Heat has never been one of my reeeal favorites on True Blue. I gave it a 6.5 (that's the lowest rate I gave to True Blue - Jimmy Jimmy also got 6.5)
I'm the one who gave this song a five. I just don't really get slow jams. Anyways, this song was only a single in the UK and Australia, and it flopped. Apparently it got a lot of airplay on R&B radio in America, too. Listening back, I guess I could have maybe given it a 6. But nothing higher than that. I didn't know Janet could speak French; that's kinda cool.
I thought it was nice, and the French parts even raised my rates. 7.5.
And the first title song leaves the competition. I really just adore this little number. I should have given it a 10 instead of a 9. This is really how you do a 50s homage song, Cyndi. The bridge just ***** so hard. This song is a part of our first tiebreaker in the competition, but I'll explain more about that when we get to #12.
This one is really nice! It takes time but it's definitely a grower! #13 is enough for it, though. I gave it an 8. So cute
One of my top two favorites on this album. Janet is just serving so much attitude. I LIVE. And it times in nicely at 4 minutes and 7 seconds (you know my main complaint with Ms. Jackson has been her song lengths). As I mentioned a little earlier, this song tied with "True Blue". So I moved to the tiebreaker (who had more 10s), and they had the same number. But Nasty's next highest score was a 9.5, while True Blue's was a 9, so Nasty won
What? I expected it to be higher than that! I liked it quite a lot and gave it an 8.5. As you said, it's full of attitude, and it's just the adequate length. The beat is killer, also.
We just couldn't go one day without getting rid of a Cyndi song, eh?? Ughhhh. This song is really just incredible. I mean, what an album opener. I having a hard time deciding between this and Papa Don't Preach on which was the better opener. I regret so much giving this song an 8 instead of its rightful 10. It was looking like this song would make the Top 10 until the very last day for submissions. It lost a tiebreaker to #10 so we have a bit of a cliffhanger for tomorrow!
Best song on True Colors! I gave it a really deserved 9. It's such an amazing album opener, as you said. And the video *****, also. Really good!
We begin the Top 10 with the second half of the tiebreaker with "Change of Heart". This song had more tens, so it got to sneak into the Top 10 after being in the 12-14 range for most of the time before the submissions deadline. To be honest, out of all the great Janet singles this era, I don't know why this was her only #1 on Billboard. There were much better choices for a #1, but I guess the timing was right. It's not as bad as I remembered, it's just not very captivating either.
Another title track and album opener leaves now that Control is out. This lost yet another tiebreaker to #8. This song just sounds really different. Was anybody else making music like this in 1986? Any historians would be helpful in answering Very strong song (I gave it an 8), but also a little too long. 5:55 of repetition. I guess that's how Janet felt the song would get stuck in your head

It's poppier than everything else. Least amount of bass, percussive elements. Total precursor to Escapade and Runaway.

Most of Control's sound was inspired by the music Jimmy Jam and Terry were making with The Time, and everything Prince had done till that point.

That's exactly what I thought when I listened to it. It's got a nice hook, but as you said, I expected it to captivate me more. I gave it a 6.5... that's pretty close to the lowest rate

Now this one captivates. From the awesome intro, to the awesome beat and some of the verses too: "When I was seventeen, I did what people told me..."
As mentioned earlier, this song tied with "Control". Both had the same amount of 10s, but WHYDFML had four 9s, while Control only had three 9s. I gave this song an 8, but I think maybe I should have given it a 9. The "I never ask for more than I deserve" part is so lovely. A lot of songs have kinda dark vocals, but then out of nowhere, these angelic vocals will pop up, and they're so nice. The intro is really awesome for some reason; I love the banter between girlfriends. And the piano that shows up midway through is a welcomed addition, albeit a bit random.
The only song to make our Top 10 that didn't make Billboard's Top 10. How was this not another hit for Janet? I absolutely love the hook, even though it's a bit tamer compared to other hooks on the album. As Eli said, it's really gay, so maybe that's why people weren't here for it back in the day, but it's why we're here for it in 2012.
