GMAYL & Judas are both underperformances. GMAYL's #10 position, being a brand new with a video & Super Bowl performance, is decent I guess. Same with Judas, but I believe Judas got killed off by TEoG but anyway that's for another time.

How many people over 40 (or even 30) are doing that?

I'm not very familiar with most of Madonna's discography, but from what I can discern, she hasn't really tried to make quality music like her earlier work since American Life, and even that's debatable.

Oh NOW we are going to get into it.
In the past decade alone, Madonna has the biggest dance song of the decade with Music, one of the best performing single of all time in Hung Up, a critically acclaimed album with Confessions on a Dance Floor, a high performing urban single with 4 Minutes, all the while changing her image and taking (badly paid) risks with albums like American Life. In her 3rd decade of making pop music, she has done more than 95% of the rest of the industry. She has certainly strayed in ways and has made mistakes in dating herself by going too young...but accomplished and quality are understatements for what Madonna produces.

Well, Madonna's name alone should make the song debut at the top 5

Madonna may be older than her pop peers, but I don't subscribe to the mindset that because of that fact she should be held to different standards, especially because had she released (& when she releases) a truly worthy hit I'm confident it will smash.
I think this new digital era benefits her a lot as people will buy any song they like. That + the fact that she's Madonna will propel a truly worthy single to a higher chart position than any from her past few albums.

No, "Judas" wasn't a flop. It was an underperforming single.
Judas, peak: #10, sales: 870,000
Marry The Night, peak: #29, sales: 500,000
They're not in the same category.

I just listened to Hung Up, and it's enough for me. I stand corrected.

Edit: @ ya'll getting happy Bcuz it went top 10 ..
This is MADONNA we are talking people. and GMAYL is her COMEBACK and LEAD SINGLE. +
She performed it at the Super Bowl and added M.I.A And Nicki into the formula + she released the video the same day as the single on AMERICAN IDOL.... And yet she struggled to go top 10. Obvious signs of a flop alert.

Please learn some logic. Here you are comparing a 5th single, to the lead single off one of the years most anticipated albums, and performed in front of 100+ million.

Dont underestimate her
I think that if she made this awful song go top 10 at 53
With a good song she can definitely get a #1

"Flop" is not the most fitting term. But I think we have to look at this relative to the amount of promotion that went into it. When you consider everything that was lined up for this song, it really underperformed.
So many different things were put into place to prop up this less than stellar song.
Imagine how she could have performed if she actually released a great song. I think a #1 could have been obtained if the first single would have been better.

Thank you! The song would be terrible IMO regardless if it was a 15 year old or 50 year old singing it.
I hope she worked with Timbaland again on MDNA... Guetta will also suffice.

Tbh, i love Madonna and her work but i despise this song, and it just bothers me how some Madonna stans now are playin the "it's not her prime what were you expecting, at least she's doing stadiums" card, when the reality is, that the majority of you hypocrite basic hoes were saying GMAYL was a number one hit for sure after the super bowl, and Gaga would be the elthon john at the golden globes and she needed to sit down and all kinds of stupid stuff.

Right. People forget that not only has she been going for 30 years...but she has been controversial for the large majority of that time. Even in her prime nothing was a guarantee. She has never been a universal sales monster...she is an innovative entertainer. Perhaps GMAYL isn't groundbreaking, but having it still in the Top 30 2 weeks later and in the Top 10 on Billboard is a success for her at this stage.
