They haven't. The US has invaded many countries and installed leaders who would agree with them. Puppet states. They did this heavily in Latin America. It was would done heavily during the Cold War. But let's not act like the Soviets were innocent.
The US has fallen to a military style diplomacy. Something that Eisenhower wanted to avoid. So in a way the US controls many countries through diplomacy and military action and seeks violence last. The problem is they want the world to follow their ideology. And they've succeeded in that.
