Apple has been planning this for a while. They're planning on taking out Spotify and they even announced at their developers conference that Apple Music was going to be a revolutionary music platform for indie and up-and-coming music talent. Do you actually think they would just spontaneously change their policy in a day? The same company that plans things years ahead??

Taylor has pop culture power, but she can't make Apple do s***.

The main concept of their service was going to be much more fair to indie and up and coming talent, yes, but every user gets a 3 month free trial, and artists were not going to be paid when their music was serviced by people under that free trial. 3 months is a long time, and people will be on free trials all the time meaning there will always be time where artists aren't being paid. That's where the problem was, Taylor stood up and said something, and they agreed and are now paying labels for that 3 month trial.

I do think they would change a policy about the free trial in a day when the biggest artist in Pop music speaks out on a wide scale about not liking their service, gives some great reasoning, and tons of people back her. That's bad press, and they knew they had to do something.

I really doubt they changed it after her note, things like that don't get arranged in less than a day.

They were planning it from the beginning and this was a nice PR stunt to bring more attention to Apple.

Yes! Her power! Following her post, she had galvanized quite a few indie artists. There was a cascade of support for her Tumblr post by indie artists. She has that power! Anything that Taylor posts anywhere is probably read by millions of people and not just fans but those in the music industry. It is enough to galvanize the music industry and this is what happened.

I will just point out that Eddy Cue, a Senior Vice President of Apple has gone on the record with an interview for Billboard, stating that Taylor's letter was the cause of Apple changing this policy.
