I don't think the sales are that disappointing, but they're not that great. I would have expected more with some of the massive numbers we were seeing in the earlier parts of the year.
Single sales will be irrelevant within a couple years, tbh. But the ratio will probably remain the same, so the Hot 100 will essentially be an airplay chart like it was ten years ago
Hmm I would say Taylor is the only one that didn't reach expectations. This week as a whole will still be extremely high, not just the top songs.
Sales aren't peaking since they managed to move up 5% this year, probably 6-8% after this weeks tally. That's great considering weekly this year people kept saying they were low & we had less abundance of smashes versus 2011.

I'm confident they will recalibrate their formula again.
If digital did decline, and streaming blew up, wouldn't it balance itself out anyway?
If it's true that they get the number of streams each week and use a multiplier to get the "points", then surely in a few years time when the #1 streaming song is getting 5 million streams per week or whatever, then it'll count a lot more to the Hot 100 naturally.
It's just the same as what happened with downloads. When they were introduced in 2005, they didn't have that much of an impact, but by 2008 after digital sales had gotten really big, it ended up being the dominant factor in the chart.

That would be so sad. I like that streaming is included, but it shouldn't be the main factor. IDK, I like the mentality that I paid for a song and it is now MY song in MY library.
