'Jupiter Ascending' Opens to $23 Million in China

Thanks to a solid debut in China, Jupiter Ascending took the top spot at the international box office this weekend.

The movie opened to $23.2 million in the world's second-largest market, which is more than it earned in its first weekend in the U.S. Through just three days, Jupiter Ascending has grossed more in China than in its next three international markets combined.

So far, Jupiter Ascending has taken in $107 million overseas. With another $30-million-plus on the way in China, plus an opening in Japan, it should ultimately reach $150 million overseas. Regardless, with a weak domestic number and a massive budget, the movie is still poised to lose a ton of money.

Hmm, Deadline's been looking at last year's movies, and their estimates have only 14 movies having made a $100 mil profit thus far - including DVD releases/TV rights, etc. for the ones that have been out. This despite the fact that 15 movies had a box office of over half a billion dollars.
(19 movies made at least $50 mil profit.)

This is why the thing some people in this forum like to say - "oh you just have to double your budget to be a hit" - isn't true.

I don't think so. The Divergent Series has managed to get a lot of attention since last year. Lots of people whom didn't see the first one will run to the theaters to see this one, while Cinderella is the same history Disney sold a long time ago in an animated form.

Cate Blanchett is getting rave reviews as Lady Tremaine in Cinderella...that character is getting transformed into a much more dynamic persona (not turn her into Glenda the Good Witch like they did with Maleficent, mind you) but her motives, and drive as to why she is such a bitch. I fully expect Cinderella to eclipse "this Insurgent/Divergent installment", and "Maleficent" when the final WW tallies are up.

I think Home can muster more than $26,000,000 US opening week...its only competition will really be the 2 week old Cinderella. And those movies are competing with mostly different demographics:

Home : 2 year olds to 10 year olds...boys and girls

Cinderella: 8 year olds to 15 year olds... mostly girls and

I'd be personally shocked if "Home" didn't take in at least $35,000,000 to 40,000,000 US opening weekend, and over $100,000,000 US total.

Well, the expensive Interstellar made more than 4x its budget, yet Deadline's estimates have it as not even making $50 mil profit yet (and that's including DVD and TV sales).
Home's also quite expensive, so it's gonna take a lot more than 100 mil to be profitable.

My figures were US only.... I believe "Home" will easily at least grab $250,000,000 WW making it profitable, and then some...

No, it'll probably need markedly over $400 mil.

Interstellar with its $673 million box office hasn't made $50 mil profit yet, even after DVDs and TV rights and such. It cost $165 mil, while Home costs $135 mil.
