Why? It happens all the time. I think you're of the thinking that being a racist is like being a Neo-Nazi when racism is common and most bigots don't go out of their way to avoid people they're bigoted towards; my parents are homophobic, but they don't plot our deaths, they don't avoid gay people and even have gay friends. Moreover, most people
do associate closely with people who they think lesser of all the time (race-wise, intelligence-wise, class-wise, anything) and many even marry them. I don't understand why people are surprised by this.
