Formation works as a closer if you take in the whole message and theme of the album. Going through the up and down and at the end, she calls for ladies to get in formation and slay, despite all the hell. She still loves her man and her baby, and now that she's gotten through her personal hell, she's ready to slay. Once you evaluate the message, it's clear why its the closing song.

I think it might have resonated better if Formation was new to us.

No. It'll be same as 'Reading' AM/iTunes. 495k (40k streams), 3-day. Early reads say 1 million for him, but guess that depends if he has album only and so on.
