Jesus. Ripping a drip out someones arm? Too far.
As Blueberry said, there's no way these labels can still get away with this, right? The fact they had people coming out and opening up about these stories and the GP having more of an insight on how these companies work, they must have sorted this stuff out. I hope so anyway.
It's certainly over for TVXQ, otherwise there's literally no way they'd have decided not to leave with JYJ (which was their original plan). I also feel like some of the older and more successful idols like BoA, SNSD are probably free of it too by now but, to be honest, who could really say whether trainees or rookies still have to go through that kind of treatment
I'd like to think their trainees are treated fairly well now but I have no idea if that's true. But based on recent events, like them placing priority on the health of injured members (Kai's back, D.O's ankle, Jonghyun's nose, Onew's neck, etc.) and Krystal not having any fainting spells recently (#pray4her) it seems as though they've softened a bit. I hope.
I'm sure anyone good at Google-fu could still find the old translated TVXQ contract (the infamous 13-year one). I remember having a print out of it since it was only PDF at the time.
But like
it's really not cute sometimes and I think part of it is definitely taking advantage of young kids with poor parents willing to cosign anything that will give them a chance in life.
It's worth noting though that even if some agencies have loosened up as far as treatment of physical injuries are concerned, all idols on all companies except YG are pretty criminally overworked. Like their schedules would be pretty much illegal for a western artist
Yeah, and they only got 5% of their revenue if their album sold over 500,000 copies which, until Mirotic, hadn't even been done for like 6 years.. and that isn't even 5% for each member, that's 5% divided by the number of members.
It's funny because back when this whole lawsuit was a big deal and JYJ were arguing SM didn't pay them **** SM's defence was "we paid TVXQ like a million USD last year wtf are you talking aboiut!!1".. but when you consider that SM literally took at least 50x that amount for themselves it's just mindboggling.
Makes you wonder what kind of regime the SM Rookies go through...
Remember when Busker Busker blew the lid on how Superstar K operated?
Quote:
Busker Busker’s now in the midst of promoting their sophomore album, and the band’s lone American member, Brad Moore, has made some pretty shocking claims against the show that made him famous in a new feature article for Noisey. The most damaging is his implication that Superstar K was rigged, despite the fact that the winning contestants are supposed to be partly decided by a public vote, similar to American Idol.
“The last week was one of the happiest times in all our lives, because we knew that that Friday night, we could go home,” Moore recalls. Everyone on the show had known long in advance that Ulala Session, the other finalists, were all but scripted to win. “And then the next day, we were going to wake up in our beds. Our real beds.”
The trio’s manager –who was contracted to manage Busker Busker during their time on the show, but not after– also told them before the finale that Ulala Session would win, although it’s unclear if he had concrete knowledge of this or was just making an educated guess.
Moore also claims that Superstar K requested daily that the contestants (most of them in their teens and twenties) get botox treatments (the network footed the bill), and that the show’s producers often criticized their physiques with snide remarks. He was also put on a diet of tofu and salad at the rural house where the contestants were contracted to live at. He claims that they were confined there when they weren’t filming or performing, and that his phone and wallet were confiscated upon arrival.
However, the worst allegation is what Moore says happened directly after the show when the contestants contracts had all officially expired. The contestants– most of whom had been awake for over 24 hours and surviving on little sleep during the entire two-month duration of the series– where whisked away to an exclusive nightclub to party until dawn. Heavily sleep-deprived and still separated from their friends and family, they were put on a large bus and driven to a mansion (Busker Busker’s manager called it “the incubation house“) where they were served new contracts and, “conscripted into another lengthy lockdown for “idol superstar training” on an “after-show” season.”
Luckily, Busker Busker refused the bus ride after being tipped-off earlier and warned not to board under any circumstances, and were able to avoid being coerced into any post-show commitments.
You can read the full article over at Noisey for more details on Busker Busker’s journey to super-stardom and all the behind-the-scenes drama that came with it.

Omg, I was thinking to post this video before I got to your comment.
It's so awkward because Hyuna has no *****s for KKS and isn't under his thumb, so she says whatever, while Hyomin stays silent and impartial. All while the hosts feel pity for her. I cringed! But that video made me like Hyuna a lot, she really was right on for saying it!
Didn't U-KISS have to beg their fans to fund their album? The struggle is real
Well the album that fans paid for was Only U, the album produced and written by U-KISS and also a limited edition special for the fans. Not even promoted or anything. A bigger mess, they won't even get money out of this.

What a mess. So, before they started selling 500K+ and there was still five members, they weren't even getting 1% of their sales?
That's a mess. I hope by now they've changed their regulations and how they do things. What a ****** defence too. SM, their contracts really are the lucifer.

Basically.
Moment of silence for Super Junior who in 2007 sold like 160k copies of their album and they had to divide the 2% revenue from that between all 13 members involved. I probably make more money slaving my ass off at a supermarket than they did that year.
In a way the entire horrible management system justifies itself, because the popularity of groups means more members, which means the money has to be split more ways, which means they have to have more ridiculous schedules to MAKE more money. Vicious cycle.

hol' up
is anybody here REALLY good at math (and....bored?)
because I think we can do a little experiment here that might even get picked up by news outlets. If we compare the amount of money that a teen/young 20-something earns on minimum wage/barely above at a supermarket in a year to what an idol makes after expenses are taken out, I think we might get something interesting...

Give me some examples/numbers to work with and I can try. No promises though, because it's difficult to figure out how much idols make from anything other than physical sales.
Lol even with companies taking the most part of the money and somes even creating a crowd funding for their album oppar can still afford a car most of us probably couldn't so let's not overreact now.
