Usher & Mariah are the only artists the last decade to have a record breaking on radio smash, and been able to follow-up the rest of the era successfully and not have the single destroy it.

The "Birthday" video ****ed up that song. It was destined to be a hit but it needed a sexy video with her showing her boobs. Instead we got a McDonalds birthday party.
Whoever becomes remotely popular, you hear they're writing for Rihanna. Can she do anything other than post pics of herself online smoking and looking like a 6/7 on a good day?
Who cares? She is still the greatest modern Pop female artist.

Legends.
FLAB & Say Somethin Killed TEOM era & the era even had ILT which went top 20.
Usher's one of the only one's (Along with Beyoncé during DIL & Ashanti during her debut) who did it.
I have to come to realize "Shake It Off" is one of the best pop songs of the year. The chorus is too good and erases the awful other parts of the song.

It's good enough to work in spite of how unlikable she is!

It annoys to me how Taylor keeps getting praised for aiming straight for the middle of the road every time. Shake it off is such a basic, done before, anybody song.

The backing synths throughout the whole song (most prominent in the first verse) are so 90s. The trumpets are kind of Chumbawamba esque too, that decade seems to be Max his reference point production wise lately (see Katy's attempts at 90s dance on Prism). Idk what it is but the whole song has that "CLASSIC POP HIT" feel to it, even though the bridge is criminally atrocious and the lyrics are so generic. There's something about that melody and those horns.

It has nothing to do with Taylor, Max Martin could have given that song to anyone. The praise is to him.
It won't sound like leftovers, Taylor sells more than Katy now so she will get preferential treatment. Katy's next album is going to be a mess though! Dr. Luke won't forgive three of his hits going to waste.
Meh, with the decline in sales there is no way she could have retained her level of sales. At least her single sales remain intact, which bodes well for the album. Her annoying self will still go multi-Platinum. She is basically the last old school mega selling superstar we have.
