As I mentioned above (you must have not gotten it), I think the 2012 VMAs definitely marked the passing of the torch from Bieber to 1D. The VMA loss didn't send Bieber crashing down to the bottom, but I think this moment made it very obvious that 1D fanbase had surpassed Bieber's in size.
Bieber is definitely going to lose fans from the recent events, and many of them will jump onto the 1D ship. Bieber lost more fans to 1D during the boys' initial rise to stardom than during Bieber's downfall in the past few months.
