Oh no...there goes my #1. But definitely top ten worthy, thanks for voting for it whoever did.
As a kid I was fascinated by this, it was the first Madonna related thing I remember.

This impressive video was Madonna's first collaboration with Jonas Akerlund. It starts off with the rising of the sun, until it progresses into a hypnotizing section, featuring images of daily life: from people riding a subway, ordering food, bowling, and children in a classroom to sped-up city-scapes and freeways at night. Note how in almost every scene with people in it, someone is staring directly into the camera, while the others simply continue with their daily lives. In between those parts, we can see Madonna doing all sorts of crazy dance moves. Ultimately, Madonna goes to a club, where she dances, until she falls asleep on the dance floor.
Watch!
I can't describe how much I deeply love this video. From the hypnotizing scenes of your average person's daily lives, to Madonna's awkward dance moves in between: this video grabs the viewer's attention from the first second to the last. It succeeds at being a masterpiece, without a lot of action, without being outrageous, without an endless budget. I don't mean I dislike those kind of videos, but I think the ones that manages to be something different and succeed at that should receive praise. And this is one of them.

To be honest I was thinking of voting for this or What It Feels Like For A Girl. But I probably chose this one instead because it's more "iconic". The concept for Ray of Light is brilliant and suits the song very well.

Now here's a very big video leaving. Now where should we begin?
The video begins in a glamorous hotel. Madonna enters, looking tired and disstressed, as she walks down the hallway to her room. In this room, she has a romantic (and sexual) fling, with an attractive man (played by Tony Ward). Some of the doors to other rooms were opened, exposing the viewer to glimpses of various couples performing cavorting in BDSM fetish outfits.
In a dream-like sequence, Madonna rolls around in bed wearing skimpy-lace underwear while various figures come and go. The only nudity occurs when a topless dominatrix-type woman, with partly-covered breasts appears and roughly grabs a bound man by the hair. Her outfit, which includes a peaked leather hat and black gloves, copies the iconic ensemble worn by Charlotte Rampling in the controversial film The Night Porter. The theme of androgyny is also briefly alluded to when a woman who closely resembles Madonna's lover is seen in men's clothing with a drawn-on pencil mustache.
The overall presentation is surreal and deliberately ambiguous. The retinue of strange characters may be real or simply fantasies from Madonna's imagination. In the end, a rejuvenated Madonna rushes out of the hotel room smiling and laughing. The video then fades to a black screening with a written phrase shown in white on the top left-hand corner, "poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another," which later fades out.
The video was highly controversial. The only bit on nudity (from the topless dominatrix-type woman) led to the video being banned on MTV. This created a furor that made headlines. Because of the video hardly being played, Madonna and the label decided to release the video on VHS. This was the first music video to ever be commercially released.
On December 3, 1990, ABC's Nightline interviewed Madonna on the video. When asked whether she stood to make more money selling the video than airing it on MTV, she shrugged and answered, "Yeah, so? Lucky me." She also mentioned that the banning was hypocritical as male artists were able to show music videos on the channel that contained sexist and violent imagery. She also mentioned that in her "Vogue" music video, she had worn a see-through lace top that exposed her breasts, but this was passed by the channel. Watch this very impressive interview now (part 1 / 2)!
Watch!
Again, a very impressive video. (Although all videos are amazing now so that doesn't say much...) I fear this part will feel redundant after the huge write-up but it's amazing. It is a highlight of her career. After the release of this, everything changed. Without this video, Madonna would have faded into irrelevance. With this video, she's the Queen Of Pop. This actually is the case for all the video that are yet to come anyway. Actually, this video was in the top 3 (even #2) for a long time, but it got kicked out by the next video.

Don't get me wrong, I love that video, it's iconic, special moment in her career and allthat but the video itself is rather simple. I prefer a lot of her others videos and don't get the fuss about it making the top4!! I'd have put it in the top 15.
But I completely agree with her point of views in that Nightline interview. She's so right.

And we've reached the top 3! Before shooting this video, Madonna said she wanted it to be more provocative than ever before. I think everyone would agree she succeeded!
The video starts with a girl, Madonna, running down the street. She witnesses the murder of a young woman, but is too frightened to protest. A black man walking down the alley notices the incident and decides to help the woman, but the police arrive and arrest him. The murderers give a threatening look towards the girl and leaves. She escapes to a church and sees a caged saint who resembles the black man on the street. As the song starts, the girl utters a prayer in front of the saint, who appears to be crying.
The girl lies down on a pew and has a dream in which she begins to fall through space. Suddenly she is caught by a woman, who tosses her back up and tells her to do what is right. Still dreaming, the girl returns to the saint, who becomes the black man she had seen earlier. He kisses her forehead and leaves the church as she picks up a knife and cuts her hands, bleeding. As the chorus starts, the scene shifts to Madonna singing and dancing in front of burning crosses. In the meantime a church choir sings around the girl, who continues to dance with them. The girl wakes up, goes to the jail and tells the police that the black man is innocent; the police release him. The video ends as the girl dances in front of the burning crosses, and then everybody involved in the storyline takes a bow as curtains come down on the set.
The video was, just like the previous one, highly controversial. Religious groups protested that the video was a blasphemous use of Christian imagery. The Pope banned Madonna from appearing in Italy because of the video and urged a national boycott of Pepsi, which withdrew their contract with her.
Watch!
Now here's another video not known for the visual experience, but for the huge amount of controversy surrounding its release. I am not the biggest fan of this video, hence I did not vote for it, but I think it should be ranked high as it's one of Madonna classic moments. Everyone recognizes the scene of her dancing in front of the burning crosses or the scene in which she kisses a statue of a black saint. To be very honest with you all, I think #4 and #5 deserve a top 3 placing more than this one but I do think it deserves to be this high.

So glad that it's not #1 but I love it anyways.
It took me actually quite some time to fully understand the storyline in that video, used to find it complicated.
