Paulie is just afraid of how people perceive him. He's a lowkey narcissist. That's why he even thought to mention his "grandma....i mean aunt with cancer."
For some reason he's wrapped up his self-esteem in "winning", when the healthy thing to do is to accept his shortcomings and mistakes and look for ways to grow beyond them. But instead, when he feels like he's not "winning" he starts to feel uncomfortable and like people are attacking him. When in reality, it's mostly his own feelings of insecurity creeping up on him.
GrODner would never let one of her men get booed. No wonder she loves Nicole so much (female hating, men worshipping women.) Many people have deserved to get booed and it turns out to be women twice (with Aaryn obviously deserving it even though others that season did too.)
